Franz Ferdinand ISN'Ta punk band, but took a lot from that music, taken into the larger picture.

You just said it yourself.

As far as I'm concerned, every single rock band that deserves respect has taken things from other bands & artists to be re-invented in such a way that they can have a sound that they can call their own. That's something that has happened with these bands:

- Metallica mainly influenced by Motorhead
- Nirvana mainly influenced by Meat Puppets
- No Doubt mainly influenced by Madness
- Green Day mainly influenced by The Clash

Somehow these bands have managed to make themselves more successful than their influences because they have taken their sound and as you mentioned taken it into a larger picture.

The reason why I despise The Darkness is because they are taking the exact same elements from other bands and not doing anything new with it.

I like The Darkness. Especially 6 of thier tracks. It's one of the few good bands out at the moment, in my opinion. Most of the music at the moment tends to be utter shit. The Darkness are a great band but would have been more successful back in the 70's.

i don't hink they WOULD have been more successful back in the 70s. i think they would have struggled to have any kind of chart success...the reason?

queen, led zep, sweet, glitter, slade, ufo, deep purple

and in the late 70s - rainbow, gillan, leppard, saxon etc

the only reason the Dankness are big-ish now is the 70s style is vogue again and they are one of a few doing it

The Darkness are good fun and it's a good CD to have on at a party but it's not something I listen to often.
They have their moments but I think they need to try and do something different if they want any staying power.

'when i first heard them, i unaffectionately referred to them as "the dankness", and i still stick by this'

And there I was thinking the Queenzone 'audience' had found themselves the next great satirist...

You'll be telling me next John Wayne was a good actor!

john wayne was a hero - he managed to make six films during his eight year battle with cancer
- the motivation to carry on working or doing what you do, when you knnow you're dying is something to be admired

watch the shootist and tell me you still don't think he could act

Fair opint; I wasn't defending Darkness- I liked few of their tracks but I guess I wouldn't even want to see them live. All I was against was amking all those bands like FF "fresh" and "new". Anyway- my bet is in 10 years time nno-one is going to remember them. The bands you've mentioned are gonna be remembered for a long time. And that's the thing- if it's good- it will last. If it's not... Well, Darkness can't even do the second album...

I understand many dentists are replacing novacane with Coldplay. They certainly leave me feeling numb and drowsy.
Blow it out your ass.

Jesus, Coldplay - monotonous, boring, same old same old on every song.

Franz Ferdinand - there's a band who may be something "new", but all the songs are VERY similar in structure and format which is boring as hell, and very dissapointing, and now the Future Heads have come along - it's like with Busted and McFly... there's a market for this genre, let's get a band that does the same and rinse it.

To be fair, The Darkness lads may have "copied" (I prefer "borrowed") from their influences, but who else around is like them?

No one.

Everyone gets so caught up in this business of being "different"; I really dont see why? Theres no point being different for the sake of being different, which is all FF etc are trying to do.

The Darkness play the music they like, and in style which pays homages to a certain era, but their almost certainly some of the best musicians and performers outthere right now.

Its all about fun - Id expect Queen fans to get that! Its not a joke, but its far from serious. Its good fun music, with blistering guitar parts, and, thanks in part to the singing, you cant mistake anyone for the Darkness, or mistake the Darkness for anyone else - therefore theres no copying worth mentioning. If they sounded exactly like someone else, Id agree. But they dont.

Second album should be great - the new tracks played live at christmas sounded pretty good.
(theres another thing - live band second only to QPR at the moment; total entertainment, and ROCK!)

With the announcement that Franke has left The Darkness citing 'musical differences' what is your view of The Darkness as a band?

Are they defining a new kind of retro genre? or are they a joke which has now inevitably worn thin?

They are certainly over due a new album?! the traditionally 'difficult second album' after such a successful first?

what do you think?

in your opinion you were right
but that just goes to show how ignorant you can be

it's a fine film

with a good cast and some nice cameos...did you know that so many actors "asked" to be in that film? Lauren Bacall and James Stewart...plus a couple of others said they'd even "just play cards in the saloon scene just to be in it"

it was a poignant and special film, made by a true professional
