I think he's talking about the "repeat after me" segments in Queen's live shows, Wembley being a good example.
Not sure if it's "Day-O" rather than just vowels.

He usually did it before under pressure, most of the time with a glass of beer. Most notably wembley (god that was like ten minutes!) and live aid (when he threw beer at the crowd.) that and he did a bit of that during AOBTD at wembley (no beer).
i think it was probably some thing that grew from the first LOVE OF MY LIFE songalongs...getting the audience involved
the_hero is correct, though I guess Freddie sung Day-O during The Works Tour '85 also.
his first "singing with the audience" was in 1979 during Now I'm here, that was just the basic "yeah" stuff during Hot Space he did a few more "cools and yeahs" and in 1984 he started to do real vocal improvisations, like impromptu's and then in 1986 came the Day-O and the impromptu's came late ron in the show
Yep during '85 he already did Day-Oh. Like LIVE AID
Oh, now I know what ur' talkin' about :D
Ya, that thing at Wembley lasted forever.

Is it true that Freddie often forgot the words to the Day-O song and had to have it written on the palms of his hands?
fatty.
fatty.
I always loved when Freddie did the DAY-O thing.
Live Aid & Wembley were classics!
Like at Wembley when he sings so high he says to the audience "I can't go any higher, let's go down a little".
But when he sings as high as he can, and Holds the note for quite some time, (which is amazing!)...
...Roger kids around with Freddie & the crowd and does a little drum end roll after Freddie ends the note! Adorable.

Heard that he did it before UP on the Magic tour, as to get his voice going for that song.
In Paris, on the Magic tour, he did it 3 times different times.

On the MK concert he also trys to get the audience singin like Aretha Franklin.
