well, to be honest I thought you were taking the piss.

True, I should've said the first version was better than the subsequent re-edits you'd done since. Rather than saying "just right." That was wrongly worded. But you definitely didn't take on what people said because a whole bunch of things no-one had mentioned came up. The only one that did come from a zoner was the ending with Fred. A nice addition I may add.
[QUOTENAME]Lord Fickle wrote: [/QUOTENAME]As for the processed effects, I think I use them to good effect. They are pleasing to me, and to some others. Obviously they are not to your taste, so we will have to agree to differ on that one.
Absolutely. I only ever mentioned the effects thing cause it was something I thought was worth mentioning. That was all.
[QUOTENAME]Lord Fickle wrote: [/QUOTENAME]As for requesting to hear some of your work, I don't consider it a "silly thing to say". I'm genuinely interested in what you can do, and it's much easier taking critique from someone who has proved to be better at the job. You are usually one of the first to offer critique to a mix, so I don't think it's unreasonable to ask to hear what you can achieve.
First of all, it's the way you asked. And I see you've gone a step further by making that comment about who's better at the job! Does it really matter?? Fact is, I'm like anyone else on Queenzone, I voice my opinion on things. No-one, and I mean no-one, should have to prove their worth. If you'd just left it at, "I'm genuinely interested in what you can do...", I wouldn't have any problem.
[QUOTENAME]Lord Fickle wrote: [/QUOTENAME]Your constructive views are fully appreciated, but we are obviously not going to agree on certain areas. I do feel, however, that we should all try to be a bit more positive towards other people's efforts, even if they are not to our own taste. There is no contest here now, and none of us are professional sound engineers. This is just for fun.
I did try and say we'd have differing views, so that's cool. But I don't like the idea that I should be 100% positive at everyone's efforts. I'll let others do that, thanks.
lol. Well, while I wouldn't call myself a pro, I'd definitely call myself semi-pro as I do get paid for my recording/mixing engineering. So, yes I am a sound engineer. Part of the reason I find this side of QZ pleasurable, I guess. That and I'm a musician, too.
Okay, I'll bow to pressure and post the following project I did for college.
Firstly, this is not a Queen song. Sorry, there wasn't a choice. I don't know the name of the song. Secondly, it's supposed to be an edit ONLY project. So, there isn't anything extra, so to speak.

My Edit - http://rapidshare.de/files/3132102/My_Edit.mp3.html
Not sure if the song will be liked, but hopefully my edit will be. The idea was to make the song fit between 2:58 and 3:00. Any less or more and you'd be marked down. I got a pretty flattering mark for my edit, too.
Peace,
Adam.

Hi Adam,
Firstly, I had no idea that you actually are a sound engineer, which kind of throws a different light on things. In fact, it makes me more appreciative of the positive comments you have made towards some of my mixes, now knowing these come from a 'semi-pro'. I don't mean that sarcastically, it's genuine. It also, perhaps, explains why you may listen with a more critical ear, and pick up on small technical glitches which others may not notice, or bother to comment on. I will certainly bear it in mind, next time you review one of my mixes.
On the subject of Don't Stop Me Now, I'm still interested to hear what you didn't like about the second and third versions, after I had cut Freddie in just as you suggested, aside from the processed effects, that is. I even toned down the delay on the guitar solo! I particularly like the left / right / centre echo on the first "supersonic" at around 1:28.
As for the track you posted, it's not one I have heard before, and is not my taste at all, so I am disinclined to familiarise myself enough with the full version, to pass any comment on your edit. Suffice to say, I wouldn't have guessed it was an edited version, there are no obvious cuts, and it sounds very professional, which it should do, coming from a sound engineer! Lol! Thanks for posting it though, and sorry to have put you in a position where you felt you had to.
Let's call this 'creative differences', and no hard feelings, yes? I wouldn't want there to be an unfriendly vibe between us.
Quits?

Fickle,
I'm listening right now and I gotta say I really like it. The guitar solo sounds great :-) Overall, I give it an A. Keep it up!

Oh, you've edited that while I was writing my reply - lol! I do take on what people say, but I'm obviously not going to change what I think is good. It's back to personal tastes again. I already had a version of DSMN which included the la-de-da's at the end, so it was just a question of uploading and posting it as an alternative. Personally, I prefer the version without, as it makes it a little more different, which is why I have left it as the lead post.

Keep up the EXCELLENT work, Lord Fickle! It is a pleasure for me to listen to your interpretations of Queen's classic catalogue!!!!!
It, in a way I guess, gives a bit of new life to the songs that we have ALL heard over and over and over again!
Again, keep doing what you are doing, and I know that Adam means no harm in what he says!!

Oh dang... I'd written a little post and it can't have gone through cause I can't see it anywhere. Anyway, here's the gist of what I'd written...

Absolutely dude. The one thing I like to come away from these little arguments is both a resolution and to hold no grudges. I'm glad at this, LF.
These kind of arguments make me wonder more and more about what Queen did in the studio, etc. We're just having a small tif about our ideas clashing. Just imagine Queen because there were four minds with different ideas coming together to make one piece of music that they can agree to put out. The style, the playing, the specific sounds, the mix, etc. etc.
And yeah, that track I posted isn't the greatest song, eh?! A little sympathy for moi who had to sit for hours mapping out a couple of versions!
