Me neither, but it's not a TV performance. I know this because -

a) No TV company would allow Queen to install their own lighting rig in a TV studio (even assuming it would fit) for the sake of one three minute performance.

b) I'm just clever.

This is obviously a portion of a 1979 concert that was filmed. We know it's not Hammersmith because we've seen that, so it must be another. The stage looks regular sized, so it can't be from the Crazy Tour of London, which means it's from between 22-11-79 & 11-12-79. And according to the first edition of Greg's book, it wasn't played at the two Manchester dates (mind you he also says that Brian plays a Stratocaster...). The surprising part to me is that it sounds like a soundboard recording - no audience noise at all.

Where did you get it?

Hey PG: Great observations, research, and analysis. One thing though . . . is Brian playing a Strat or a Tele? It's hard to tell because he's wearing black trousers and the black guitar and pick guard all kind of blend, but I think it's a Tele. It looks like that top curve at the base of the neck comes over and right into the neck without making that deep cut that the Strat makes. Splitting hairs, I know . . . ;) But this may also help determine when/where this performance took place. Also, I believe the Tele has more of that rockabilly sound than does the Strat, and would be the guitar of choice until Brian switches over to the Red Special.

Cheers!

As far as I believe, This was filmed as an item for a local news/magazine programme, which followed the National 6.00 BBC News. I also believe that the "abrupt" ending is due to the local presenters link to the next item fading in at the end.

Here in Scotland - that programme is called "Reporting Scotland". I believe in the London area the local programme is called "London Today".

So for those who live in the Bristol area, what is the name of this local news programme, and, does a better quality version exist?

As PG suggests, this is filmed without a live audience, so a stereo version could qualify as another (studio) BBC version. But the question is, is there a stereo version?
"Listen to them. Children of the night. What music they make."

I saw this at the time, It was shown late night on some BBC Arts programme on BBC2. It wasn't for the local news.

I cant remember the name of the programme, though I did tape it onto cassette as I knew it was coming on.

thats audio cassette btw, not Video... I didnt have a VCR back then. I still have all sorts of crap I taped off the tv and radio somewhere.
'somewhere' being the operative word.

(And yes, I am showing my age.)

I saw Queen twice that tour, both nights at the Liverpool empire.. incidentally for all the Greg brooks nit pickers out there, they played 'Liar' on the second night at the Liverpool empire.

I know Greg brooks mentions they played it in Manchester, well they also played it in Liverpool.

I remember because on the first night, the guy behind me was screaming at them to play Liar, and I turned to him and said 'youve got no chance mate'. So when they did play it on the 2nd night, I wondered if he was in the audience to hear it.

Yes that had nothing to do with CLT but its a story isnt it.

Thanks for sharing! I wonder why this have never been used in different Queen documentaries....

(Roger and John looks like they're just come from 'Don't Stop Me Now' video shooting :))

Thanks for this - not seen it for years.
I'm pretty sure it was on "The South Bank Show" around Nov-Dec 79.
Dont shun it..Fun It

Definitely a telecaster. Besides the fact that Brian never really played a strat (until the 50th Fender Strat Anniversary Party) and the fact that he used a tele on the original recording of CLTCL, you can also see it clearly if you look at the headstock and the body when he moves away from Freddie...

Btw, did anyone notice that John fucks up after the a cappella bit? Around 2:06 he skips a bar and is playing the wrong thing for about 2 bars. He still looks as cool as always though :-)

And thanks for sharing of course!

Great story! I find it always great to hear stories from people who've experienced a real queen live concert with our missed Freddie...

Thanks Sparky. Great stuff I'd never seen before!

Thanks Sparky, Great clip. I also think it is "don't stop me now" Video-ish, abiet John's bad dress sense at the time. I hope more footage will appear on line, our even an official dvd release of a concert from the late 70's, would be great.

Hey!! everybody, everybody have a good time tonight.
Joyful the sound
