Well, I usually don't post here, but,Queen is not so popular in The US because Americans prefer a Big Mac to a Filet Mignon, as someone said sometime ago. Radio stations are formatted in such a way that listeners grow framed in a certain kind of format. Queen music is fine, too elaborated, and too diverse for the american taste, this is just my opinion and entitled to it.

Maybe Queen's music is just too - intelligent - for the average American to understand.

Face it - we're a nation whose top TV programs are Survivor, American Idol, and whatever crappy reality shows are on for chrissakes...there's no imagination in it. It's really no wonder why I don't watch too much TV. (Sorry in advance if this sends this thread astray.)

The only place they are not huge is America. And in England Queen are bigger than everyone (except the Beatles).

Didn't they outdo the Beatles a few weeks back??

Miss Bea Haven, your two posts on this topic are right on the money. Americans in general have lousy taste in music. They are too shallow to see the depth and layers in Queen's harmonics, structure, progressions and rhythms. I mean, what other groups have major rock and roll hits written in 6/8 time (e.g., We Are the Champions and Somebody to Love)? On top of all that, Americans were never able to deal with Queen's early flamboyance, so they missed the greatness and majesty of the music.

Part of the problem with American tastes in music has to be laid at the feet of the American educational system. Very few elementary, secondary, and high schools have quality music and arts programs. Too much emphasis on math, science, and English. As a result, American students aren't taught to appreciate creativity, and creativity is rarely encouraged. Given this scenario, it shouldn't be any surprise at all that the best rock and roll music of our time (Queen, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, U2, etc.) came out of Great Britain, where creativity and art schools are much more in abundance.

Miss Bea Haven, the TV in the UK is flooded with a lot of the same rubbish as the US then as we have to put up with Pop Idol, Big Brother and whatever other crappy 'I want to be famous' reality TV show they have on. So I wouldn't say this makes the US any less intellectual than the UK.

We missed out on T.Rextascy as well.

I concur with the idea that Queen's music may be a bit too overwhelming for today's music scene.
The sheer variety in their catalogue can stun many of their fairweather fans.
For example, at the summer camp where I work, I've ripped copies of my Queen discography to MP3 to play to the kids. I pick a few tunes, ask them how many of them they liked, and watch as their faces drop after I tell them it was all one band.
HE ROCKS US STILL. Proud Supporter of the Queen Lives Compilation

I think they should be more appreciated in the world today. They are way better than The Beatles and Led Zepplin sucks. Listen to him on Innuendo at the Freddie tribute concert, its awful. Queen are the best, period.

Queen is like soccer: Huge everywhere except the U.S. where they were on top for one year. I cannot understand why they are not worshipped all over and considered the unquestioned greatest band ever.

Queen's biggest mistake(a bad one) is the near constant mistakes they made in choosing a single. Their hits are wonderful, but everytime I talk to someone who likes Queen because of the two greatest hits albums they have, I boast that I can burn 2 cds of Queen that will not contain any of those tracks but still be better. I would use tracks that should have been singles like:

Liar/Doing Alright/My Fairy King/The Night Comes Down

White Queen/Someday One Day/Fairy Feller/March of the Black Queen

Flick of the wrist/Lilly of the valley/Lap Revisited/Leroy Brown

Prophet Song/Death on 2 legs

Millonaire Waltz/Long Away/You Took My Breath Away

All Dead All Dead/Spread Your Wings/My Melancholy

Jealousy/Dreamer's Ball/Dead on Time

Dragon Attack

Las Palabras De Amore(G3, I know)/Life is Real/Action this day

Keep Passing The Open Windows

Was It all Worth It

My Bijou/Don't Try So Hard

Mother Love/Made In Heaven

I think you could use these to make two stronger albums of Queen. How Bo Rhap is so huge and yet March of the Black Queen and Millionare Waltz aren't, I will never know.

LED ZEPPELIN wasn't one person. It was a phenomenal band with the greatest drummer ever. Zeppelin were one of Queen's biggest influences on Queen. Brian and Roger in particular were the biggest Zep fans. And Robert Plant's job on Innuendo at the tribute concert wasn't very good, no. But his Crazy Little Thing was brilliant! And have you heard Queen's version of Zeppelin's Immigrant Song? It's rubbish. Because they both forgot the words, Plant and Mercury.

I'm sure they are a good band, but Robert Plant at the tribute was awful, maybe it was just those sucks he sucks on. But everyone in the world seems to love them so I'm not gonna argue, everyone has different tastes and Led Zepplin isn't in mine so whatever.

I agree...
Freddie has the best voice out of anyone ever
Brian May is just as good as Jimmy Page
John Deacon could out play John Paul Jones and Paul McCartney
Roger Taylor is one of the best drummers...like John Bonham....and the problem Queen wasn't as popular is because American's are bulletheaded.
Once people figured out Freddie was gay, that's all they cared about, and they started condeming their music. My god, the only songs they play on radio here are WWRY, We are the champions, Bohemian Rhapsody, Bicycle Races, and You're My Best Friend....HELLO PEOPLE! Queen has more songs than that, and they're either as good or better! I hope to be a DJ and spread Queen's music farther.... what's with only playing singles and hits? If they would play it, it would probably be a hit. It makes me so angry, because Queen is very respected in England, and here in America, our taste for music.... well, lacks true music
G
I think Queen are very popular but not as respected as they should be. Artists like Bowie Clapton Led Zep The Who Bob Marley etc seem to me to get more respect than Queen. I think really Queen are a band u either love or hate, u either get or u dont but to me they are the best and most talented band
