The only thing we get cheaper than in the USA is medication. I was comparing prices with Janet earlier today - we both take statin based meds for cholesterol - I pay £6.50 for a month's supply, Janet pays $250.

I was out this morning and there are a few petrol stations that have run out of fuel. It's rediculous, the protesters have already said that they will not be blocking the delivery of petrol, yet people still rush out and panic buy - assholes.
My medication that I take regularly costs me $10/month. I'm not sure what it would cost without insurance though. Any medication that I would require that has a generic brand is $10. If there is no generic form of it, then it's $20. Dr. visits are $15 co pay. I pay nothing if I'm admitted to the hospital.
I've got crap insurance at the moment with a huge deductible, so basically...even if I do get sick, I can't afford to go to the doctor..:-S Need to change it, I'm tired of doing without antibiotics when I need 'em. Just hate to pay $250 a month on insurance.

My husband's current place of employment does not provide health insurance and we have to buy it ourselves. I am chronically ill, and it was extremely difficult to find an insurance company to even cover me at all. Once they heard of my ailments, and the meds that I take, they would say "We will cover you and your son, but not your wife." We finally found a company who would give me coverage, but because of my pre-existing conditions, the price of the coverage is very high, over 1000.00 a month. And on top of that there is a 4000.00 deductable before my insurance company will pay a dime on anything. My prescriptions routinely cost about 700.00 per month, which are covered in full once the deductable is met, however I still have to take the money out of my pocket to pay for them, and wait a month to be reimbursed by the insurance company.
Good lord, Janet..:-o That is a TON of money for insurance!

Barry, here if you are unemployed or make below the state's poverty level, and have children under the age of 4, you can get Medicaid. This is free government government (ahem tax payer)funded health insurance. Children can be covered under Medicaid until they are 18 or up to 23 as long as they are a full time student, but the parents Medicaid coverage ends when their youngest child reaches age 4.
Typically, your job depends on how good your insurance is. If you work for a larger company that is for profit then you tend to have better insurance. But if you are self-employed or work for a small company...forget it! Your insurance will cost you your right arm and your left foot.
I work for the school system but our insurance is pretty expensive with high deductibles bc most of the people that are employed by school districts are women and women have babies and babies cost money to have. State employees used to have great benefits but now that is just not the case. They used to tell us that our inexpensive, fantastic health insurance makes up for our low pay. I've never had insurance through my work, I've always been on Tony's through Delta, which just filed bankruptcy today. My husband is so glad he resigned, he saw this coming. Along with more paycuts and insurance increases, we were losing about $300/month each year.

Isn't health insurance ridiculous? A few years ago my mum had both her hips replaced on the private health insurance which my parents of course pay outrageous prices for. Last year she found out she needed a revision because one of them was coming unstuck. So she went to the specialist and he told her that she'd have to go on the PUBLIC waiting list because the private hospital didn't have the right equipment to do revisions.
Several months later, having been bumped up the waiting list by the specialist because things were getting really bad, she had the op and said that the public hospital was heaps better than the private.
In the private hospital they push you through as fast as possible so they can get more patients and therefore more money. The public hospital took its time and in the end she had to beg them to let her go home.
So it isn't just a UK/US thing.

hmmm that's odd!! We don't have public or private hospitals persay in the state I live in. Every patient will be treated regardless of their ability to pay.
Yes, lack of money or insurance has never stopped me from getting treatment. Of course my credit is screwed.......
