Roger's drum solo

I know some have said that Let There Be Drums (or Let There Be Gene?!) is based on a Carmen Appice track or something, but does anyone think it bears a remarkable resemblance to Cozy Powell's Dance With The Devil?

(Assuming I'm not the only one whose dad bought the 7" back in the day and happened to find it in the loft).

I think it`s a tribute to Cozy as well as a Roger Taylor solo.. perfect drumsolo, I love it! :-)

All I know is, someone on here once said it was based on another track - but I always thought it bore a rather more significant resemblance to Cozy's track.

Then again, Carmen Appice (clearly) is the completely wrong name, and I don't why I have it in my head, but I can't think of the actual person that was mentioned. I'll search...

It's a cover/remake if you like of Sandy Nelson's "Let There Be Drums". Roger apparently named his version "Let There Be Gene" on the tour, but the CD lists is as "...Drums".

Regardless, It sounds great! I agree w/ someone from another post that said its teh best solo Roger ever did. I have to agree. It's not too long & it thumos all the way through. In someways it reminds me of Bonzo as well. I can't wait to hear this in NJ!

I went out and bought a best of Sandy Nelson, and the Roger stays faithful to the original. I wonder if Roger thought of Sandy as a drum idol when we was growing up, or if he just dug the tune.

I agree! I remebered the bass drum floor tom rolls he does are very Bonzo esque! well spotted my freind!

The station used to be WWDB 96.5 FM. Sid Marks hosts the program; "Friday's w/ Frank" 6-10 pm & Sunday's w/ Sinatra" 9am-3pm. It ran for over 30 yrs. there. Then in 2001 the format changed & the show went to 1210 AM. Sid still hosts it & has passed 40 years.
