What about Drowse? That to me is their strangest song ever. There are some chord transitions that are pretty unusual, but work at the same time.. Roger is quite the underrated musical genious sometimes.

At first, I thought Mustapha was nonsense. I mean, complete nonsense. From the song structure to the lyrics. Complete, absolute nonsense.

The answer I got was on the Album Cover: Jazz.
I thought: goddamn...it's a joke with...scat singing! Being a very self-conscious singer himself, I thought it wouldn't be absurd to think that Freddie wanted to poke some fun at the meaningless (in terms of verbal language) scat singing.
So, bear with me (lol), just like in many Jazz impro or recordings, he put some phrases or names which do have a meaning, and then he went on doing pure vocals.
Just vocals, without meaning: it's the singing for the sake of singing itself - like, if the nonsensical phrases sound good, and can be sung as to sound good and convincing and funny to one's ear, then it's worth trying.
And he did it. If you think about it, it's brilliant. It does sound like he's speaking Arabic, but, at the same time, you figure out he's not but the singing fits the song and sounds good in that context, to the point of making us want to sing along!
Ok, what Freddie did was, in my opinion, most humble insignificant opinion in the...Cosmos(!), was much more sophisticated than scat: it's much more close to vocalize than to scat - it's not as much like he's emulating an instrument, like Jazz scat singers often do. It's much more like he's really creating sounds intended to be sung, not played, that will fit the song even though they barely have any meaning, and looking at the whole, the vocalizing, as it does sound as if he were singing in Arabic, ends up fitting the songs' structure perfectly. The harmony, the melody, all is intended to give an Arabic feeling, and he pulls it all together and makes a very clever song.
So, it's singing for the sake of it - it's pure singing.
It's pure magic.

fairyfellers master stroke is really nice lyrically when listened to in comparison with the painting. very imaginative.
