My precious Sarah

I'm distraught today. My precious Guinea Pig, Sarah died through the night. I accidentally bred her when I didn't realize that one of my other GPs was a male. It is very hard on GPs to have babies. When I came downstairs this morning, I found her and the baby, that looked exactly like her, dead. I just can't forgive myself for what I did to her. She'd still be here right now if I had realized Em was a boy sooner. I loved her very much.

Awww, that's sad. I lost my two guinea pigs within about a week of each other. :(

I'm so sorry about your loss, Lisser. I know how hard it is to lose a much loved pet. They really are like members of the family.

Don't beat yourself up about it. Sometimes it's hard to tell whether they are male or female. Besides, pregnancy is not a death sentence for a guinea pig - or else there would be no more guinea pigs. Sometimes things just go wrong.

something similar happened to my sweet sweet (female) hamster Li An a few years ago. I felt sorry for an abandoned male hamster at the pet store, and I brought him home and put him with Li An. I actually called him Ricky (from RIcky Martin of course). And after a while my mom took him back because Li An became very un-happy and extremely exaggerating her hiding the food like hamsters do in their mouth and it cut her. she also was pregnant and had dead babies, and she died too. :S

Guinea pig sows are at risk of pregnancy complications because the babies are born large and ready to run. Breeding after 8 months of age can be fatal for a guinea pig who has not had a previous litter due to dystocia. The symphysis (a joint of tough fibrous cartilage which firmly joins the 2 pubic bones) can stiffen upon reaching adulthood and she may not be able to deliver her pups unaided. Sows with dystocia usually need a caesarian section. The survival rate is very poor.
