Rare & Early Queen Footage

A question that has been asked many times: Is there more material from the early Queen days then we know now?
The answer would be yes. A few week ago QueenZone member S van der Veen discussed something with me that I just couldn’t get out of my head, so I did some research.

Many might already know about this but a very clear piece of evidence about whether there is more material from Queen's early days is hidden in the documentary “Killer Queen” that was broadcasted on the BBC. We’re talking about a small piece of footage, around 5 seconds long that shows a few bits of shows that were somehow recorded in 1973/1974. So far only shows like the Rainbow gig have been leaked to the internet. This piece of film proves there is more then we know.

I took a few screenshots at certain frames that hold some valuable information.

This is a screenshots at the beginning of the clip. You may overlook this if you just watch the clip but if you freeze it you can clearly see a camera man on the bottom right side of the screen. I happen to have some knowledge of camera’s and I can tell you that this is guy is holding a PanaVision camera that was used a lot in the 70’s and begin 80’s for television broadcasting purposes. (A picture can be found here: http://www.filmvideo.org/panavisionbillhpage.jpg) Can you see the white/grey film holder on top, now compare it with the screenshot from the clip. ;-)
So what does this mean? Well probably that this concert (or part of it) has been professionally filmed. There are obvious multiple camera’s around seeing as someone is filming Freddie from below. Freddie’s clothing makes me suspect that this was filmed at a very early gig, probably during the first Queen tour.

This screen was captured on the last frames of the clip. One thing that caught my attention was Rodger's Bass drum. It has the Queen logo on it and if you look closely you’ll see a “Q II” on it, which might suggest that this is from the Queen II tour around 1974 maybe late 1973. Another thing about this clip is the way Freddie is being filmed here. The camera is following Freddie very relaxed, almost without any shaking, also look at the perspective, there’s no way a fan in the audience could have filmed this.

Ok so we still don’t know if these concert were fully filmed or just parts of it. I do believe now that theirs is a lot more footage from Queen’s early days then most of us think. The first piece could very well be from the famous Marquee concert in 1972 were Jesus was played. There is a audio recording so why couldn’t there be video material?

I hope I haven’t bored you with this. If so I’m sorry and just forget this.

Certainly looks pretty interesting.

It's not a Queen II logo on the bassdrum, just the Queen logo as it was on every show of Queen, the black chrest on the white background. There is no such thing as a Queen II logo.

One thing is for sure, it's either footage from the first or second tour. Not Sheer Heart Attack!

I've asked some people about this mysterious footage, because I dealt with it too. Some say they don't know it, some say it's Queen in the Rainbow (March show).

I don't know, maybe Sunbury 1974, Australia?

Sunbury '74 comes closest to mind indeed.

It looks like a "II" because the image is blurry.

Exactly.

There's some kind of stand there in front of the drum (a mic stand?), casting a shadow on the skin. Either because of multiple light sources or some kind of digital artifact from the film process, the shadow is duplicated, creating the impression of a II next to the Q.

Sunbury '74 is still from the Queen I tour. So I think it's from that show.

I really hope we find out one day where this footage is from. It's early, and it must be spectacular.

Wow. It really sucks how those links don't work for us to see this footage. You think there is more of Queen? I bet there is more of most other artists out there that will blow our minds. Sometimes it is just the quality not being available in 5.1 which nowadays they can make it be so. Sometimes it is something else to do with the quality, the picture, sound, certain parts missing. Sometimes it might just be scraps of film that nothing can really be done with though I would say something could always be done with even a few seconds. Sometimes it is that someone else own the rights to the film. Sometimes the artists don't know anything about it. Sometimes it is lost and sometimes most importantly which I think might the case for some of these bigger seller artists there is more than they are saying they just do not let on or perhaps even lie about them not being more in order to make their latest releases sell as best as possible and to surprise people down the road years later. As in sometimes it is a marketing strategy. Who knows? I hope that the later is the case like madness!!
