In regards to Mercury's appearance in 'The Great Pretender" he's odd looking appearance could be the result of the mostache being shaved off, and considering he had the mo for most of the time from 1980-87, this would give him a pale look around the upper mouth.
Furthermore, we do see Mercury looking quite pale on the rest of the face, perhaps the lighting?? I don't know.
But my point is, Mercury found out for certain in March-April 87 that he had the AIDS virus, after undergoing a serious of tests, read Hutton's 'Mercury and Me' book for more.
SO, he would of had these tests in either late 86 or very early 87, and from reading different sources of info which do back each other up, Mercury was feeling unwell not long after the Magic Tour for the next few months, to me, this indicates Mercury would have been worried like hell that secretly something was not right.
Also Mercury found out in November 86 that two former men he had slept with in the past had perished from AIDS 2 weeks apart from one another in that same month. Can you imagine how shit scared you would feel in hearing this?? At first you may go into denial saying to yourself "I will be ok" but it would eat at you and haunt you like shit!!
SO this would have haunted him for months, then to find out for certain of he's fate 6 months later that he had the deadly incureable AIDS virus.

KS is something that happens in the later stages. If he was getting KS in '85, he'd have been dead by '88.
