hmm it doesnt LOOK inset from the picture :-/ just looks stuck on...now im starting to wonder about the authenticity of the picture :-/

has anyone emailed Brian about it? :/

Unfortunately there's not really much to quote, except "Brian has recently carved space for a six-pence into the headstock: is this sacrilege?".

As someone above said, I don't think it's deeply cut into the Red Special, but enough to keep it in place with a bit of wood glue I'd imagine.
i'll think of a signature later...
hmmm the thing which bothers me about the idea that its been 'set' into the headstock is that you can see a reflection of the coins depth in the wood of the headstock

am i making sense?

well i mean...

IF the sixpence is set INTO the headstock then it would sit flush with the wood around it and therefore when viewing it from an angle there would be no depth or serrated leading edge of the sixpence to reflect in the polished / varnished wood of the surrounding headstock

AS you CAN see this depth of the coin, it leads me to believe that its stuck ON rather than IN the headstock...

i can make it no clearer than that without making a picture

and i wouldnt know how to upload it if i had one :-/

I see now...

Well, it all depends on how deep the six-pence hole was, doesn't it. It only had to be slight, just enough for the coin to slip inside and have something other than the wood glue to hold it in.

Say, the coin will be maybe 2mm deep, and the hole only has to be 1mm deep, but it's still a hole.

ohhH lol and i went to all the trouble of making and submitting a picture to the misc section on Queenzone for an explanation! lol

well to be honest tho, a 1950 - 60's sixpence is very thin and light, its probably only a few mm thick anyway...ill measure in a mo

I have one at home, possibly slightly older, which is no thicker than an English five pence piece, which cannot be any thicker than 2mm.

Another question regarding Brian's six-pence, the filed edge - is it filed to a "point" or is there just a flat edge? I managed to fiel the upper third of my six-pence down to a point, which is OK, but it doesn't leave much to hold on to and I find I'm very close to the strings.

no no its just a standard sixpence
there are times on the Return Of The Champions DVD where you can see it clearly.

also, im now convinced that the sixpence is simply stuck on to the red special headstock

The sixpence is NOT seated in a carved hole in the headstock, it is simply glued on.

I've seen it up close, plus if you look at the shot in this link, if it had been sunk into the headstock there would have to be a slight cut around the sixpence. i.e. the hole would have to be bigger than the sixpence to fit in and therefore the hole would be able to be seen.

IT'S NOT BECAUSE IT'S NOT THERE.

indeed!

um...when have you seen the red special up close? :D

Nice picture, but, from a different point of view, as I have said, the carving doesn't have to be very deep, and, I would imagine there would be more than glue holding it on.

Also, if there is a carving, any form of glue would likely have the coin raised anyway due to it's thickness.

But, then again, I'm only going by the magazine with a Brian May article in it! (-:
