I can't wait to have kids (when I'm older obviously) ! :) And though I'm scared of actual childbirth, and I'm totally for adopting, I'd prefer if the baby were my own...and pregnancy can be fun! if you had a job as a teacher, or whatever, you get paid for doing nothing! Plus, you get to balance stuff on your tummy :P

There are plenty of people who are what's called, 'child-free by choice'. And yes, there will always be people who'll look at you like you're selfish or otherwise not 'normal' since you don't want kids - or at least not your own kids. Ignore them like... cabbage. :-)
Only you (and your future partner) have any say in it. Never feel guilty. IMO, your last statement sums it up perfectly - "I'd rather help a kid that needs love instead of bringing another into this horrible world. "

Teachers in my state do not get a paid maternity leave since they have the summers off. The state believes that if you are going to have a child, you should plan to have the child during the summer while you are off. I know it's not a very rational way of doing things, but it is their way of not having to pay for time off. If a teacher does have a baby during a school year, she must save sick days she earns and use those as her maternity leave to get paid. If she has no sick days and has her baby during a school year, she does NOT receive any pay, none. Another option she could take is to take out short term disability insurance BEFORE she were to get pregnant. It costs about $35/month and it only pays her 60% of her normal pay while the time she is off.
I'm not sure what other states in the US offer pregnant teachers, but in KY, teachers do not get paid maternity leaves.
