Go see Lord Of The Rings. The worst that can happen is you get completely hooked like me. I also recomend you read the books. as good as the films are they can never repplace the experience of reading the books.

I'll have to check out the Corpse Bride, but I was never much for the claymation stuff.
And I know that I'm missing some great cultural phenomenon by not watching either the LOTR or Harry Potter stuff, but I kinda wanna read the books first, and as a grad student I've got too much to read. I did try and watch the first LOTR movie, but by the end of the movie I was just sitting their confused because I couldn't keep any of the characters straight! My old history advisor told me to read the books though, because they were written by a historian from the area of history I want to study and have a lot of social history of medieval England in them...

First of all Harry Potter is NOTHING like LOTR. It doesn't have by far the same depth and range of LOTR.
The author of LOTR is professor J.R.R. Tolkien, he was a professor of linguistics, not history, with a keen interest on medieval poetry and old english. Middle Earth came about to explain the origin of two languages he created from scratch (the elven languages Sindarin and Quenya). from them he created a whole universe, of wich LOTR and The Hobbit are just a small part, he used to describe them as the tip of an iceberg.
The Hobbit is a good place to start but not at all necessary to understand LOTR, because the action in the book is more paused and there is enough time to absorb the information (there is even a synopsis of The Hobbit incorporated in the narrative).
Peter Jackson's work is fabulous. He was able to take the central themes of the books and put them in the screen and make those characters come to life in a way that you bellieve Middle Earth is real (as Tolkien intended in the first place when writing the books).
Take the time and read the books, you wont regreat it.

I've seen it and it is amazing! It's the best musical I've ever seen. I had an obsession with Les Miserables when I was about 5 and just watched it on video over and over, so I know the whole thing off by heart. It wasn't till recently that I actually got into it again and realised how brilliant it actually is.
