I'm inclined to believe the story about ticket sales. If it was about the equipment, then they would have gone straight home to London after the Lund gig. But they went to Copenhagen anyway, and did an interview and photo session. That suggests the show was cancelled last minute, not that it was planned that way the night before.

For a band that was on 100 quid a week or so, why incur the expense to go to the next city if the gig has been cancelled ? It doesn't add up.

They did a radio interview in Norway ! All 4 members were live in the studio.

It wasn't about expenses it was a promotional tour of Scandinavia !
