I've been listening a lot to the Leiden ,Budapest and Stockholm shows recently and I must say that some of freddie's vocals are fantastic. He sounds very powerfull and with a lot of guts too. The wembley gigs were prabably Freddie's worst from the Magic Tour. It was only released because it's a famous gig not because it's one of Queen's best(though it still is good)I think that from an artisctic point of view Queen should better release their very best stuff. They would get much more critical acclaim!

i would say that the wembley and knebworth gigs from 86 were showing signs of being on the road a long time...vocals were not the best

granted i havent heard anything but the wembley concert of the magic tour but i love it. i thought he had the power as he did in live aid. he owned that crowd. especially when he played with them after the song a kind of magic. when he sings his impromtu also. i had tears in my eyes when sings that one. i love my cd and dvd of that concert. i will always remember freddie that way strong and dynamic on stag and a shy sweetie off stage.
I agree with that statement. If you take One Vision from Budapest for example, vocally, it's a top notch performance which really ranks besides the early years, the power is there and he reaches the note on "dreams of sweet illusions".
At Wembley, his voice does sound weak, on the first night especially where he is heard struggling with AKOM but on the whole, his Magic tour voice was far better than The Works and at least on a par with Hot Space. Listen to Champions at Budapest, he really goes for the high notes and in parts, sounds just like he did in '77.

I loved wembley freddie was so powerfull i loved that concert, also live aid freddie was in true form.

There are a lot of people who seem to agree. I often read the statement(also on this site)that Freddie wasn't great after The Works tour but I don't agree since I think that he gave some fantastic shows during the magic tour. He sang with lots of guts in a way. People tend to forget there were very weak periods in the seventies too. When you hear him sing in Japan in '79 , you can't believe he's one of the best! The end of the Hot Space tour wasn't very good too. And in my opinion he was at his best for the first time in '77 during the Races tour. Listen to the Glasgow and Bristol shows: fantastic stuff.
Surely during the Wembley concert Freddie had some problems of vocal extention: you can hear it clearly e.g., in "Break Free", "Another one bites the Dust", "Radio Ga Ga".
This doesn't mean that his performance wasn't good... he did wonderful things in the mid and low tones (just think of "The world we created", or "Under Pressure", or "Kind of Magic", or the whole acoustic Medley".
Freddie's voice during the magic tour was perhaps paying the debt to a long period of touring/recording, but in my opinion it was very powerful and "coluored" (even though I still think that his best live recording, up to today, is the Live at the Bowl)..
Sometimes I just think that he (and Queen) exaggerated a little bit in writing songs with such high keys/notes to reach: Freddie's voice was so beautiful in the Low-Mids (He was a baritono voice, think of Ensueno, or the beginning of The Golden Boy, or I'm going Slightly Mad's refrain)... it would have been very interesting if he had worked more on that quality, instead of getting always (and not always good, often good thanks also to Roger's choirs) that incredibly high...

But on the whole i love the Magic tour, setlist was great..i havent' heard many other shows apart from Wembley '86 but i have heard Love of my Life in Manheim 1986 and i have to say that it's my favorite performance of LOML live..its great; sound is wicked, freds voice is beautiful, the crowd are brill...the only fault is that i wasn't there! *sobs*

But in terms of bad singing nothing beats teo Torriate from Japan in '82. The verses were lovely but the chorus was awful, Freddie's voice dis-integrated and Roger had no real idea of what he was singing and no one could hear Brian anyway.

That's why I like watching the early day videos the best, they aren't as good quality, but Freddies voice is absolutley amazing with very few noticable mistakes.
