Indeed he was very important for Queen history. He was Queen's Ivan Vaughan, plus his songwriting partnership with Brian influenced Freddie to begin composing in the pre-Queen days.

I think his point is just the opposite. I think he is saying that in spite of his worst decision as a pro musician, he is glad it happened so there could be Queen. If he hadn't quit Smile, they would have certainly gone on without Freddie who would have almost certainly made it with Wreckage or some other way. There's nothing snobbish about that to me.
I think it would've been cooler if instead of steeping out of the way he merley stepped down and just played bass and sang back up. That way Queen would've had four backup singers. Plus Tim was obviously a good writer considering songs like Earth and Doing Alright, so I think Tim would've even fit the band.

If you read the first post, you'll notice that it was a matter of FREDDIE or Tim, not JOHN or Tim.
With Tim in the band, they wouldn't have gone looking for a bass player.
