But ... they're better live than in the studio, where their sound is very dry and soul-less.

I picked up the Pete Townshend book "Who I Am" tonight and am looking forward to curling up and diving in.

I agree, it looks very interesting. It did get a scathing
review though in Private Eye, a UK satirical magazine. Basically the review says PT bemoans that hard rock took over from the melodic sounds of the 1960s and then points out that PT and The Who were part of that process. Can';t wait to read the book rather than the reviews!

I have to stick up for By Numbers here, but only partially. I don't really care for it as an album but it's got two or three great tracks on it. More to the point, I think they sounded ace at that point in their career - it's a pity they weren't turning out better work though.
The thing I appreciate the most about it though is that it isn't pretending to be anything but a band making up the numbers. It's the same reason I can listen to some mid-70's Lennon stuff that some people can't digest. It's not always easy or pleasant listening, but I admire someone who can say (in song form at least) 'fuck I'm sick of doing this'.

yeah, chinese eyes - a nice album, also love daltrey's raging moon....some nice bits on that too....esp the tribute to keith with the guest drummers (inc roger) on the title track

Endless Wire is grownup music, so for an eternal old fart like me it was a great album. Better than some of the trash that Kenney played on.
Don't pick it up if you're looking for classic Who though, because it ain't. I think anyone expecting that is probably living in some kind of denial and needs to grow up. Bands just aren't going to make the same kind of music as they were making 40 years previous.
