Tell me that after listening to Zeppelin bootlegs from 69-72, or even the official releases.
To me, no rock singer matches Robert Plant during this era. He was at the top of his game.

I think he did great on CLTCL. And the Kashmir/Innuendo transition was pretty cool.

Much of Innuendo's vocal is placed in quite a high register with many fifth octave notes. Plant in his prime (LZ I - IV period) would probably have nailed it as he possessed a unique head voice that allowed him to sing those notes with apparent ease. But constant touring and recording together with smoking, partying and alcohol took its toll of course, as did doing multiple gigs with a flu. You just can't expect to sing like he did without taking care of your voice very carefully. In the end, he had to go through throat surgery in 1974 IIRC, and didn't let his voice rehabilitate after that - instead he continued to smoke and drink. He still possessed a very interesting voice with that slightly broken tone we can hear on Kashmir for example, but it was but a shadow of his former vocal prowess. To his own admission most of the stuff on Presence sounds quite weak (sitting in a wheelchair during the studio sessions certainly didn't make things better either) and I personally can barely stand hearing him struggling and going flat in their later stuff such as Fool In The Rain.
Freddie Mercury was, according to an early interview I can't remember the name or exact date of, told by his doctors to start nursing his voice when it started to act up slightly during (I think) the late SHA tour, otherwise he might have had to undergo surgery as well. Fortunately he never permanently lost his voice and pretty much maintained his great range while actually gaining power and weight to his tone as his career progressed. Perhaps he just never went as reckless with his voice, as he's known to have gone for alternate melodies when his high range started to drop off a bit (Japanese Jazz Tour gigs for example). He knew not to kill the goose that laid the golden eggs.

Couldn't agree more, fair enough he didn't learn the lyrics to Innuendo as well as he should have but his overall performance was woeful. I love the guy and I love his style but he had a major off night. Still a total legend though.

Couldn't agree more, fair enough he didn't learn the lyrics to Innuendo as well as he should have but his overall performance was woeful. I love the guy and I love his style but he had a major off night. Still a total legend though.

Can't agree with the first part - he couldn't help that the song was outside his vocal ability by that point, but nothing was stopping him from taking the time to learn the words properly.

In an interview, he explained what happened with the song. According to him, he did put his time trying to memorize the lyrics but he said it was just one of those things - he couldn´t!
What i can remember from his explanation was that he was on vacation with a girlfriend in Morocco and he was trying to memorize the lyrics and for some reason he said that he simply could not remember it. And he said he tried and i believe him.
You can see his body language as he was performing the song with Queen. It´s the body language that sends the message "I´m fucked!"
And why would he put himself in this (ridiculous) situation?
I know that he doesn´t like to reharse Led Zeppelin, but that is his stuff. This was a very special occasion and he was performing with other artists, so in this case i believe he did the best he could do. Of course, it would be better if he had a plan B, like a screen to look at the lyrics or something of the same effect.

If that were the case, they should've rubbed it off the setlist, simple as.
However, hindsight is 20/20, so I understand they probably didn't realise how bad it was until it actually happened.

Didnt he throw in the word "premonition" at some point in desperation when it isnt even in the lyrics. I actually thought that was pretty good improvising.
