I don`t know a lot about it because I´ve only been there once, but I remember that there were lots of old castles and nearby there is the "Niederwald Monument" which is pretty famous in Germany (it was built because of the unification of Germany in 1870 i think). And I remember the wine festival every summer.This year it´s from 18 - 21 August.
