I would like to point out that as of 2006, Queen have sold 32.5 million albums in the US. KISS have 19 million albums in the US as of 2006. In that's just in the US.

As far as concert sales go, the last Q+PR tour was an embarrassment in terms of promotion, Brian even acknowledged this. DJ's in certain markets didn't even know Q+PR was touring.

If you were more knowledgeable about the subject matter you'd know that an artist's record label pays a fee to the Recording Industry Association of America to audit (or re-audit) an artist's catalog.

KISS' catalog has not be re-certified by the RIAA due to the fact that KISS are currently not in any contractual deals with any record labels. Secondly, KISS' first record company, Casablanca Records, was bought out by Mercury Records. Mercury Records was later bought out by Univeral Music. KISS did not want to resign with Universal when their contract was over and decided to go with Sanctuary Records, which is now going through serious financial problems (enough to warrant Sanctuary Records' two founding members Rod Smallwood and Andy Taylor, of Iron Maiden fame, leaving their own company).

So with that stated, KISS' catalog has not been re-audited, thus the figures on the RIAA website are grossly outdated (and that goes for most bands, even Queen).

RIAA states that KISS "Alive" has only gone Gold (500,000 copies) in the U.S., but has infact sold 4 million copies in the U.S. plus 3 million copies internationally.

Poor promotion for the Q+PR tour is likely, but the fact is Queen lost their popularity in the U.S. due to the "Hot Space" cd and they even turned off many older fans with "Another One Bites The Dust" earlier on.

Others simply can't be bothered with Q+PR, because of Paul Rogers.

I went to the see Q+PR and enjoyed myself.

With all of that said, know what you're talking about before posting a reply next time.

I see what you're saying, and I do believe you. It's the same thing with Arbitron and radio ratings.

KISS also went through a slump, like Queen, their "Disco" album almost killed their popularity and it wasn't until their reunion that they actually started to regain popularity. KISS did tour throughout the 80's and 90's, but they weren't selling out arena's and they played smaller venues in larger markets. The facts are that KISS did play more shows than Queen. I think KISS played around 1500 shows in the US alone, while Queen only played around 250, pre Q+PR.

As you pointed out, I'm not that knowledgeable about the subject matter, the truth is I'm not a fan so I could care less. But I did research the subject and found some interesting facts that you might find interesting, if don't already know. The estimate is, KISS have sold around 25 million albums (excluding "Beth").

I would like to see more information on this matter. Some sites claim KISS have sold over 35 million albums, and others say 25 million, so I really don't know. If they've sold 35 million albums then they should get credit. Fan or no fan, there's no denying their popularity in the States. I would attend a KISS + Queen+PR show, I'll just leave when Queen finishes, or arrive before Q+PR take the stage.

KISS' "Dynasty" lp was not a disco lp. It did contain one song "I Was Made For Loving You" which can be considered disco/dance rock. When the lp was released, the song was even remixed (and extended) for use in night clubs.

This single was very successful in the U.S. (it sold 500,000 copies which earned it a RIAA Gold Singles award) and the song was an international hit (making it the largest selling KISS single).

Even though this single and lp sold very well, it turned off many of KISS' die hard fans. The merchandise was also another factor in turning away long time fans.
and it wasn't until their reunion that they actually started to regain popularity. KISS did tour throughout the 80's and 90's, but they weren't selling out arena's and they played smaller venues in larger markets.
Not entirely correct here. KISS' popularity in the U.S. fell after the "Dynasty" lp. "Unmasked", "(Music From) The Elder", and "Creatures Of The Night" were commercial failures. "Unmasked" sold 500,000 copies in the U.S. (RIAA Gold lp award). "Creatures" eventually earned a Gold lp award several years after its release.

KISS regained their popularity after the release of "Lick It Up" (the lp where they shed their makeup). KISS revisited the U.K. and Europe several times during the '80s and were actually more popular there during this period than they were in the '70s.

"Lick It Up", "Animalize", "Asylum", "Crazy Nights", and "Smashes, Thrashes, and Hits" all sold 1 million copies in the U.S. "Hot In The Shade" sold just under 1 million copies. This cd contained the U.S. hit "Forever" (RIAA Gold Singles award).

KISS hit another down turn when "Revenge" was released. The cd was a favorite of fans and some critics, but sold just over 500,000 (RIAA Gold lp award) copies at the time. The U.S. tour in support of the cd was sparsely attended in some locations.
The facts are that KISS did play more shows than Queen. I think KISS played around 1500 shows in the US alone, while Queen only played around 250, pre Q+PR.
It's true that KISS played far more shows in the U.S. than Queen, but 250 Queen shows seems like a very low number.

That website is decent, but not an official KISS website.

That web page you provided was created by the author in reference to the information found on the RIAA site, which, as I mentioned before, is grossly outdated.

I've seen the figures for KISS' world-wide sales as being between 75 million and 100 million. There will never be exact figures for KISS (or Queen or any other 70s rock band), due to the way sales figures were collected. Soundscan wasn't used until 1991 to collect sales figures, so figures collected before that time are estimates at best.

Thanks for the info.

Here's some US info on Queen, it's not a official site, but it's dependable.

One thing you have to remember, Queen were extremely popular outside the US, this explains the 250 US shows, pre Q+PR.

Total shows:

There are many factors on why Queen went down in popularity in the States, mainly its homophobic population, and of course Hot Space didn't help. But, they've sold over 130 million albums worldwide, not bad for a "bunch of tossers".

I've never been to a KISS show, but I really, really don't like their music. As a musician I respect them. They're good musicians and their great business men, but not my cup of tea.

Note for some of the kiddies, this is how you discuss matters, not by saying "F U" and other vulgarities.

Very good posts JPF. Just a reminder as disappointing the U.S. leg of the Queen tour in 2006 was in popularity it STILL did REALLY well for one a group that had not toured here for TWENTY years AND for missing a major member of that group. I hope and expect good things to happen for Queen in the U.S. if they can get their act together. They are truely good enough to justify it and frankly the popularity of them with the fans who are aware of them proves it.

A tour with KISS could help with Queen and maybe it will be the only way for Queen to get as big of venues as possible. I do agree it is ALWAYS sad for a tour to have two or more acts because the shows will be SOOO short for Queen. As it is they can't fit all the songs they need to play in two hours. This next time they will also have new songs to perform live...
I've never really cared for Kiss, but, to each his own.

Well I only know one Kiss song and that is only because of that Rock School which is quite a good show. I wouldn't even know who they were if it wasn't for that programme.

Also Queen have got world wide known songs EVERYONE knows 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are The Champions.' Whereas Kiss have none.

This is supposed to be a Queen site and if people don't want Kiss to tour with them than that is their opinion. If you want to talk about how wonderful Kiss are then go on their site and moan about how you don't want Queen to tour with them. But if people want to say they don't want Kiss to tour with Queen on a Queen site then get over it.
I for one hope KISS doesn't tour with Queen and the Poser Paul.

I live in the forth largest city in the United States. We have three Classic Rock stations and the only KISS songs I hear on the radio are "Rock And Roll All Nite" and well, that's it really.

But, radio conglomerates like Clear Channel Communications suck arse and they play the same songs over and over. They only play one Hendrix song and one Santana song, and two Queen songs. Yes, you're right, it's WWRY and WATC.

This is the station I listen to.

The last thing on Earth I want to see is some pathetic, shit-ass band who has sadly found a warmer North American reception than Queen, headline a tour that has Queen opening for them, and playing a compromised set. It would be eternally awful on a philosophical note for it to be 'Kiss' of all bands. Why? Kiss is probably the only band of the 70's to top Queen in the theatricality/vamp-up area of live music. Also, for my own opinion and taste, Kiss is the polar opposite of Queen, being that I define Kiss as a band with crappy vocals and non-melodic guitar creation, cashing in on a combination of plain-commercial-generic lyrics and riffs, along with a stage image/presence that has nothing in common with their music.

I saw half a Kiss concert back in 1990, within a month of having my first car. My dad picked me up 45 minutes early, offered to wait, and in the end had ZERO resistance from me. I was all too happy to leave such a SHITTY show by such an EXTREMELY overrated band. I was there for their opening band anyways.

Kiss can Kiss my ass!

P.S. One last note... From what I have heard, while Gene Simmons brags endlessly to the public about his large number of women he has had sex with... From what I gather, Roger's history, though less documented, blows Gene off the map. I hate Kiss so much!
KISS, an overrated band. Yeah, right. They've sold more cds and more concert tickets here in the U.S. than Queen. KISS had the number one selling tour in the U.S. in 1996. Queen never did that. Queen really blew it here with their dance influenced music ("Hot Space") and never fully recovered in the U.S.

BTW, I'm a huge Queen fan, so your petty bitching about KISS makes you look ignorant.
Guess who went bowling at Gene's birthday party?
Yeah, it was Brian May.

Guess who drummed on Brian May's tour in support of "Another World"? Eric Singer, KISS' drummer.

There's a quote from Brian May in which he stated that he always thought that KISS and Queen were similar bands; KISS was the American version and Queen were the British version.

Brian has said good things about KISS and Paul and Gene have good things to say about Queen.

Paul Stanley played the Phantom in the Toronto production of "The Phantom Of The Opera". Yeah, it takes a "crappy vocalist" to sing that part.
Paul Stanley's voice has actually gotten better throughtout KISS' 32+ year career. I can't say the same for Freddie's voice. He was losing his vocal range and was becoming raspy in the early '80s.

And with that, a KISS/Queen + PR tour in the U.S. is not off the table. Since contracts haven't been signed, both bands need to say the opposite of what will probably happen.

If this tour happens, you can stay home. We don't need people like you at the show.
KISS lied about sales. Queen have outsold KISS according to the RIAA. Also, Alive is only at Gold and not Quadruple Platinum. In other words KISS lied about their sales.

KISS sales acording to the RIAA:

KISS, Hotter Than Hell, Dressed to Kill, Alive!, Unmasked, Creatures of the Night, Asylum, Hot in the Shade, Revenge, Alive III, Unplugged, You Wanted the Best, Psycho Circus and KISS box set are all Gold (500,000 copies sold).

Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over, Love Gun, Double Platinum, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, Peter Criss, Paul Stanley, Dynasty, Lick it Up, Animalize and Crazy Nights are all Platinum (a million copies sold)

Only Smashes Thrashes and Hits and Alive II have gone Double Platinum (2 million in US sales).
KISS have sold 23 million albums in the US counting solo albums from 1978. Queen have sold 10 million more than KISS with 33 million albums sold in the US.

Queen's US sales:

Queen I, Sheer Heart Attack, Flash Gordon, Hot Space, The Works, A Kind of

But,
The Spice Girls

Pink Floyd, unlike those hacks, sold millions of albums as well but didn't rely on looks. It took PF NINE albums to have a hit with DSotM. Although DSotM is worldwide PF's best seller, the best seller in the US is The Wall at 23 million in the US (counts as one sold not two copies despite being a double album) followed by DSotM at 15 million in US sales. WYWH at 6 million in US sales. Animals and AMLoR at 4 million in US sales. TDB plus DSoThunder and Echoes are at 3 million in US sales. Meddle plus ACoGDS, TFC and PULSE are at 2 million in US sales. Ummagumma plus Shine On and ITAOT are at a million in US sales. Lastly AHM, OBC and A Nice Pair are at 500,000 in US sales.

PF, like Queen, wrote their own material, had artistic control and ownership of their recordings and spawned one of rock's greatest guitarists.

The teen poppers you mentioned are no longer here:
N'SYNC are now XTYNCT.
The Backstreet Boys are HAS BEENS!
The Spice Girls were abandonded by American fans once Ginger left.
Britney a/k/a B*tchn*y is more remembered for her erratic behavior than record sales (SKANK)!

Get a clue. One of, if not, the greatest live lps ever has sold 4 million copies in the U.S. with an additional 3 million copies sold outside of the U.S. "Alive" went gold, platinum, and double platinum in 1975 and 1976. It's one of KISS's constantly selling cds.

I explained this a few posts back. Many artists' catalogs have not been re-audited, therefore the numbers on the RIAA site are grossly outdated.

Queen lost their popularity here in the U.S. with the "Hot Space" lp and never returned to the level of success they had achieved in the '70s.

As much as I like KISS, I don't like the fact that they have to lie about everything (I was taught not to lie and to look in the eye and tell it like it is). It matters that KISS don't update their sales showing that they are either too cheap to update or lazy or whatever the reason is. To correct you, KISS lost their popularity in the States from 1980 to 1983 with three flops in a row with Unmasked, The Elder and Creatures (Creatures would not go Gold until 1994). KISS' appeal was so bad that KISS Killers didn't get released in their homeland. Then KISS flopped harder with Carnival of Souls which exited the charts as quickly as it hit it (even Pink Floyd's live version of The Wall outsold it by a longshot). The reunion tour of KISS' was a fluke which shouldn't have happened as they BROKE UP AGAIN (I had a terrible time at that gig as I dealt with drunk siblings holding them up like statues)! The Psycho Circus tour played from 60% to 80% capacity no sell outs this go around (although they played better then as I saw the proper tour opener in Boston (the last ever drum solo in God of Thunder). Now they are sadly a nostalgia act playing the hits of yesteryear to remind people of their youth. Something that Rush or Pink Floyd would not stoop to (Rush did put out a covers album to have some new stuff to play in 2004).

KISS' Alive IV was supposed to be released on Mercury but KISS got angry that the label delayed the release cos of PolyGram turning into Universal/Vivendi. KISS by default went from Mercury to Island/Def Jam and they on national radio took a shot at Island/Def Jam and mocked the mainly R&B/rap roster which I think didn't sit well with some fans which caused sales to decline further. Even Aerosmith are a joke now after the 2001 Britney/N'Sync debacle!

Queen eventually regained America with Innuendo which was their first Gold album since The Works. Hollywood Records put out Headlong and it did well on US Rock Radio. Innuendo followed and did reasonable on rock radio pushing Innuendo to Gold in TWO MONTHS. Then subsequent Queen releases have sold either Gold or Platinum in the US save Queen Rocks, GH III and Queen On Fire which were not certified.

To correct you on what KISS said about live albums as death, I guess he didn't hear The Who Live at Leeds, Humble Pie's Perfomance, The Allman Bros at Fillmore East and Deep Purple who had their biggest seller with the double live Made in Japan which, unlike Alive!, was ALL live with ZERO OVERDUBS. There were some multi-disc live albums pre-Alive that were huge sellers (Fillmore East, Performance by Humble Pie, Made in Japan by Purple and Welcome Back My Friends by ELP).
