i'm not trying to justify it-i'm trying to look at the problem objectively. it's just too easy to download official material...i don't know a lot about computers, but it seems to me that bittorrent and its counterparts ought to be held more responsible for allowing copyrighted material to be downloaded off of their websites. it's right out there in the open, for anyone to grab, and yet no one seems to be doing anything about it...or at least not effectively...there's probably some legal loophole they're using.
as several people's posts have demonstrated, many downloaders don't view downloading as stealing, because they're not actually hiding something under their coats and smuggling it out of the store. but just because this isn't your traditional conception of theft doesn't make it less wrong.

Yes, but prostitution, crack, cocaine, marijuana, and other illegal things are also widely and easy access, but does that mean that we should buy it? I know it's a little different, but kinda the same lines as getting illegal things very easily.

When the FBI raided alot of College students dorm rooms all around the US, they found that 90% of them didn't own the original of what they had downloaded, so how do you get that conclusion? Downloading music and movies is a risky business and eventually you WILL be caught.

what does means "a lot"? ten? twenty? maybe a hundred of students that they searched... so it's really improbable that they get in your house for a razzia. and i'm sure, no person, who downloads "illegal" cares about such razzias, because it's so improbable that they get the razzia in their own house.

you don't have to risk that yourself, but you also can't tell anyone not to do it who wants to take the chance on it.

for example downloading a movie: a person who can afford to spent 20 euro for a movie won't do the work to download it in a poor video/audio quality, but buy the original with the nice cover etc.
only a person who can't afford to buy it or to watch it in the cinema would download it. and such persons should also have fun to watch the movies they like, although they couldn't afford to get to it "legally". to accept this would be kind.
i guess all the queen members don't care if their fans download their work or buy it.
and another question: how many of the 5000 kids were arrested in prison?? i'm sure not 90% of them... not even 50%.

I don't understand all the fuss around downloading if a person isn't going to make profit from it and downloads something for his own use. It's true, that those who can find and afford the originals won't bother to download copies. I know that some collectors sell copies of the official material and bootlegs, but I really don't think that they are making profit from it. I consider it not a buisiness, but sharing.Very few people are interested in buying these things. I myself bought a lot of stuff from such collectors, which I couldn't find in the shops and cannot order online because I don't have a credit card. And I am so much greatful to these people who shared.But what I could buy in a legal way, I did. Pirates is another thing. They spread thousands of copies and this I really consider stealing and a crime.
I really don't care about this shit, If I want to download the stuff, I dont do it myself soo...

Don't bore more this poor guy; when you think very well about it, almost all the bootlegs that are shared among fans are not legally shared too, because it is Queen music...so...we are losing some time too when we discuss this point...
