This one is different to Take 4 - GB QOIFCD Vlaardingen, Holland 2005.

Easily comparable: That one is announced by engineer as take 4, no Freddie counting, LOTS of additional guitars. That one is clearly a guitar-take.

So what this download says; that this is a VOCAL take, makes sence realy.
On this one you can clearly here the basic track is there. Bass, guitar, drums. Freddie's doing vocals and on this take their are clearly in a very early stage. Very different.

Note then that on 'take 4 - the guitar take', the vocals are quite similar to the eventual album version. That's the stage where Brian is overdubbing or doubling his guitar parts and adding 'noise'. Evidently later on in the proces.

Greg Brooks (Queen's "ARRchivist") plays these kind of things at the Dutch and UK Queen fanclub conventions.

Fair point - but as GB has 'aired' only one 'Great King Rat' version or take during his travels - and not two - (this clearly comes from a convention 'broadcast') - and as the version 'aired' was 'announced' as 'Take 4', wherein does the info that this is indeed a different take come from?

Ofcourse, he does visit this site himself - so perhaps he could set the record straight.

Ugh... if these recordings continue to be made available publically, then they'll stop playing them at conventions altogether. Why else do you think it has Greg's spoken disclaimer every 15-20 seconds?

But this is a cool version of the song. The song is very undeveloped, as is Freddie as a vocalist overall. Very interesting listen. And it's definitely different from take 4 that was played in 2005. In take 4, the vocal melodies have been figured out, and there is Brian's second (live?) guitar track in addition to the guide track.

This is one of those questions that wasn´t meant for an answer, but i have to admit that the way i writed it seems like i was really waiting for one.

I was just thinking why did Freddie count to ten, because normally musicians tend to count to four!
I assumed that no one new the answer!!

2005.09 - 20th International Fan Club Convention, Prestatyn - and also:
2005.10 - Dutch Fan Club Convention.
05. Great King Rat (take 4) 3:40 – From QUEEN Sessions, Trident Studios, 1973. Very different, with alternate guitar outtakes and vocal overdubs, cuts halfway through.

Now this is nice ;-)
I knew there were differences between the sessions GB did in UK and in Holland - but I also always assumed that the played GKR demo's would be the same.

(John, to compare; could you posts what you believe were the tracklists of the sessions?)

Of course it would be even more interesting if we would get to hear the FULL vocal demo! ;-)

Bob - I still think there is no big problem in sharing these recordings. In the early days, convention-recordings would end up on bootlegs that were sold. That's what they are trying to prevent with the 'property'-overdub.

The future? Hmm... there will be no more Dutch conventions anyway... ;-)
Let's hope GB will play something extra to markt his final performance in Holland ;-)

QP threatened that they'd stop playing the songs if the bootlegging continued. Sharing the songs on a forum is pretty much putting the nail on the coffin, if they find out. I'm sure we all recall a certain member of QP posting here now and again...
