I was actually serious. ;)
If you choose Squirtle on Red/Blue/Green, you'll have a pokemon with one of the strongest defenses EVER, and you'll also easily beat the first gym leader, but you'll need a grass or an electric pokemon for the next gym. And you won't even think about using your Squirtle on the 3rd gym.
If you choose Bulbasaur, you'll easily beat the 3 first gym leaders, and although it's the best grass pokemon, it sucks in general.
If you choose Charmander, the first 2 gym leaders will whip your ass if you don't get better pokemon. In fact, the first gym leader will be a pain in the ass if you don't either catch a Mankey in Veridian or get a Nidoran w/ a fighting attack, such as low-kick.
ON THE OTHER HAND, you'll have the best starting pokemon. By the time it's a Charizard, you'll be able to teach it Fly. So you won't need a flying-type pokemon on your team. It also has good attack and excellent Special attack and defense. Having a Charizard in your team is always awesome.
So, when you pick your first Pokemon, you have to think of the other pokemons you might have. If you don't like flying pokemon, you should pick Charmander, for example. If you don't have patience to raise those lame pokemons from the first cities, like Pidgey, Ratatta, etc, you should get a Bulbasaur, so that you'll be able to beat at least 3 gym leaders before having a pretty decent team.
There's also the way you're gonna use your TMs and HMs, etc, etc.
So, yeah, it's a very personal choice.
