How do you think the Jazz albulm rates compared to Queen's other albulms? And how did Jazz and any singles from it chart internationaly?

It's a fair offering. I don't rate it as a great album. It reached number 3 in the USA and the single Bicycle/Fat bottom reached number 5.
As a whole I would rate this a 6 on a scale of 1 - 10. 10 being a classic. It is certainly better than any of the later crappy records from the 80's. It does contain one of their worst songs in my opinion "More of that jazz"

I was the first person in my town to buy this the second it came out. Saw the band in concert just a few days before. Though I grew up with this album and loved it at the time it's not one of the better sounding records. The drums are horrible on it. Too bright sounding. No depth to them at all like on Queen II or NOTW. Dead on Time is musically brilliant. Very well performed by the band and Freddie sang his ass off. There are other jewels on it too but that track stands out for me. It's fun to re-live my youth with this album.

Jazz is one of those "had to be there" albums

if you don't get it, then there's a good chance you weren't there growing up in 1978

it had a very distinctive queen sound, but was a radical departure for them from their usual formula - definitely their Rubber Soul - 13 three-minute pop songs..don't stop me now, being the jewel

It's worth it for Jealousy and Dead On Time, that is one of their best!!

The inside poster reminds me of the "grooming issues" of the 70s.

I also like to just stare at the cover for hours.

more of that jazz, fun it, and if you cant beat them.... are the major clunkers of this record. and the major clunkers off all queen until hot space came along. but Bicyle Race is one of the most incredible queen songs ever to be heard commercially. its so bizzarre, and so perfect. has some of the most topical hip queen lyrics too. out of character in fact.

I agree that the engineering on this album is weak but it is a great transitional record for their sound going from the elaborate multitracks to a diluted rock sound. Overall I think it's a great album. Plus, I think the tour for the album was Queen's "crowning" moment in time.

I agree with Brenski. You HAD to be there at the time to get it. It was a totally different album from the previous 6 but still had all those Queen trademarks. I've always noticed when the topic of this album comes up that More Of That Jazz ALWAYS turns out to be one of the least receptive numbers. I've personally always enjoyed that song. Basically it's just Roger branching out on his own but still a cool song.

Well, I bought the album the other day, and I personally believe it to be most excellent. A very solid album, on about the same scale but slightly lower than SHA, methinks.

Fat Bottomed Girls, Bicycle Race and Don't Stop Me Now are excellent.

EDIT: Oh, and Dreamer's Ball is great!

It's one of my favorite albums. I love pretty much all the songs on it! xD Great album and very underrated IMO :D

EXCELLENT album...VERY WELL done...And all of the songs are amazing...Slightly underrated though :(...In my opinion, I would even put it higher than ANATO, in terms of ranking. :DDDDDD Dead On Time is a personal favorite of mine. *heart*

Thanks for the responses so far! I think that it isn't their best albulm, but it is because it is so different that I really like it. Some great songs, I was born far to late to see the tour though *sigh*
