Of course that's how he contracted HIV. He accepted that he had been reckless and put himself at risk, and he paid the price. That is probably part of the reason why he never complained to anyone about his illness - he didn't think he had the right to. Kind of tells you of what kind of man he was underneath all the bravado etc.
Some might lambast him for his hedonism, but you can't really hold it against him when he accepted his fate and faced it so bravely. And strove to think of others until the end. Quite remarkable really.
