When you prepare food, it's already dead. You kill something to eat it. And if you're already going to eat it, why not make it as good as possible?
Also, killing is inherent in everything. There are bee and insect traps everywhere, and ubiquitous anti-bacterial products kill countless bacteria. Mousetraps run rampant. Pest extermination has even become a profession.
