My uncle calls Freddie Mercury "Faggy Mercury" all the time...he seems to not get it that Freddie Mercury was a man of extremes and a man who was very loving and caring. It upsets me that some people can be so ignorant about homosexuals...especially when they speak of Freddie in such a way. It's disgusting.
In this topic I would like for Queenzoners to discuss how they feel about people's ignorance towards Freddie Mercury.

Well... my mum calls him that, but she's just joking (because she LOVES him).
There are a few different theories about how / why homosexuality "happens" or "develops". And I honestly couldn't say which is right. From my own life, I would lean towards the events/experiences (and your perception of them) in your life being the things that make up who you are, tied in with what I understand of chaos theory. Or something. At the end of the day, I prefer not to think about it and just let life happen.
I come from a family where it's pretty much okay to joke about anything. So a lot of things I would be okay saying or joking about might be "insensitive" to some people. Of course, I know that's different than someone saying it just to be mean.
I think it's best to have a sense of humour about these things. There's no use getting mad, especially if you'll never "change their mind". But being able to "turn it into a joke" or laugh it off will leave you feeling much better than if you take it personally or seriously.

Some people still don't get it....they take Freddie too personally...as if they KNEW him. You didn't KNOW him (unless of course you did, and then I shall apologize :P). Freddie was a PERSON. He LIVED just like any other normal PERSON. Freddie wasn't god. Freddie wasn't a hero. Freddie was just Freddie with an amazing musical ability (perferably vocal). If anyone should say ANYTHING at all about Freddie (be it "Freddie's gay" or "His teeth are crooked" etc...Who gives a shit? Freddie should be given the chance of being treated like a person; and people are made fun of. I fucking hate how he's supposed to be "SPECIAL"....He's a goddamn person damnit!
Final conclusion: Freddie's gay. He had AIDS. He died (unfortunately ;_;). But he had talent, and he was an amazing musician.
You can't stop opinions. People will ALWAYS mock, tease, and be unfair about it. Least you can do is ignore.

And also........there isn't MUCH ignorance towards Freddie, IMO. He's actually pretty well respected and aknowledged. :) Maybe it is about the music.......maybe it's not...who really knows? ALSO...think of him being called "gay" as special. Not an insult :D
His music lives on, nearly everyone recognizes his name, and no one can deny his impressive - outstanding - performances from day one until the end. People can insult him all they want. He's the legend he always knew he'd be. Insults matter not in the least.

I DO NOT think it always has to do with being abused as a child. Though that may be true in SOME cases. I would not expect each person to have the same "reason". Not to mention the fact that people deal with, and express, "trauma" in different ways.
For example, you have two brothers who grew up in about the same environment, both were abused - maybe one becomes a social worker to try to help other children, and maybe one winds up in jail for beating his own wife or children. Life is complicated, and somewhere, the chain of perception of the two men differs (obviously). I know this example deals with "trauma", but this leads me to...
I think of it more like a chain of events, not "Because of 'X', you are gay". And I mean events that may be on a deep, unconscious, level. Your personal perception of events (or even your re-interpretation of them years later). The experience may not be "traumatic". It may be a gradual association, building up to a point where there's the "light bulb" moment.
As for "chaos theory", I'm not saying this is the "reason" people are gay (that doesn't make any sense) - it's just a way I think about things. For instance, if you change one small thing, the future could, theoretically, turn out very differently.
I think homosexuality is as much of a mental illness as liking chocolate is.
Perhaps there is a genetic "predisposition". I don't know, that's not my area. I suppose it could be a "trigger" that exists as a biological mechanism for population control (lack of reproductive sex). I could theorise about that, but who knows what words you would try to put in my mouth then.
