ANNOUNCE: Portland 1974 remaster

This is my remaster/restoration of the Portland ’74 gig that was shared here last year. I’ve done it for my own use but thought some people might be interested; so, as always, if you don’t like it, please don’t download it. The original was an mp3 encoded at 96 kbps and a sample rate of 22050 (i.e. half the ‘frames per second’ rate of what a cd needs to be), though I remember at the time someone (Sir GH?) wrote that it was the best version available. Sad state of affairs if that is the case, but nevertheless it’s better now than it was.

The restoration involved encoding to wav, upsampling to 44.1, equalisation, denoising to remove some of the annoying ‘whine’ at the top, removing silences between tracks, balancing levels between L&R channels, limiting to bring the level back up (no dynamic range was lost), then final encoding to FLAC. This is an awful lot of processing (I won’t encode back to mp3 for obvious reasons), but don’t let that put you off – it still sounds better.

I’d really like to hear everyone’s constructive comments, and I hope you like it – it really is a great early performance. And I got the venue and date from Mr. Brooks so if it’s wrong, shoot him not me. :)

I see your files say FLAC. I'm downloading this anyway for my MP3 player and will post a comment sometime later. Thanks for the share and your efforts.
