This is the SERIOUS forum. People have been asking when Freddie became infected with HIV. I've done my research, and he could've been infected as many as 10 years before he was actually tested in 1987, so late 1970's, early 1980's. Please give me a real opinion on this.
My best guess would be anytime between 1980 and 1985.

And frankly I don't see this as serious Queen-related discussion. This thread should fall under the category of "gossip".

Seeing how AIDS was extremely rare before 1981 (which you should know if you researched it), and was exclusive to the American West Coast until 1982-83, I should say that it can't have been earlier than '84.

Just because it was rare doesnt mean people werent infected with it. Of course there are few on record as having the disease prior to 81 as it wasnt recognized until that year.
My own belief is that Freddie was infected as early as the late 70's. He along with many other gay men carried the disease for years without it being diagnosed well into the 80's.

Why did it develop all of a sudden? Why weren't people dying of AIDs in the 60's...

The official version is that the virus mutated or something. The conspiracy theory is that it was meant to be a biological weapon.

It was around, there were just very, very few cases (<1 per year), and so it wasn't seen as a single disease, since you don't die of AIDS, but of parasitical diseases caused by your lowered immune system.

Stop being so blockheaded and check the facts.

A) ALL infections prior to '83 were in the American west coast. Freddie didn't dwell there
B) the odds of him being one of the first to catch AIDS are very slim.

Oh please. I won't say at all that there aren't conspiracy theories in this world but for the most part there aren't these outrageous ones that some claim. Usually the uneducated are most likely to beleive them. In terms of when Freddie got HIV it was probably in '86 but could have been '87 based on his behaviour of visiting bath houses from what I understand and screwing random people during that time period and he quit cold turkey and drugs as well as soon as he found out he was infected. The other reason for '86 or '87 was because if you were infected at that time your chances of survival if treated well and were lucky was only a couple or a few years as in the time that Freddie would live. It was not until Freddie died that big improvements were made to where people could live ten years. Now if people are treated well they can POSSIBLY live without dying if they take meds all the time from what I understand.
AlexRocks can I just point out that I believe Jim Hutton was also diagnosed as HIV+ when he was with Freddie and he is still alive almost 16 years later.

As is Magic Johnson who was diagnosed in 1991, Holly Johnson diagnosed in 1991.....Freddie was just unlucky that he succumbed so soon.

Now can we please remember Freddie for who he was and what he gave the world, not for how he left us!
listen to the breeze, whisper to me please, don't send me to the path of nevermore.......
Thankfully AIDS research has greatly increased life expectancy for people infected with the disease during the past decade. In many ways we have the Mercury Phoenix Trust to thank for that.

They found out that one of the first who was infected was a flight steward from L.A. who had his usual flights from L.A. to New York and he was gay. And also very promiscues. That was between 1978/79 to 1982 and he died in 1984. That was exactly where Freddie lived that time. He was in New York from the end of the seventies and moved to LA in 1983 and then on to Munich in 1984.

I personally think that he was one of the first infected and that it was 1980/81/82 that he got it. Most of his friends / lovers are dead! It was surely the circle of the first ones to get the virus.

Anyway. It really doesn't matter when or where he got it. We will NEVER know!

Frankly, of all the subjects about Queen history this is the one I care the LEAST about and yet I keep replying to this thread... why am I doing this?

If I had a shrink I'm sure he'd have something to say - constructive or otherwise.

Well thanks 'bigV' for your input but, this is pretty serious. Yes there are conspiracies about the whole thing. Jim Hutton was diagnosed, but did not have full blown aids, freddie did. Freddie stopped taking his medication, Jim is still alive because of the medication advancements that have been made. And It takes up to 8, 9, 10 years for the disease to fully develop from HIV to AIDS. So, there is no way he contracted the virus in '85 or '86.
ALSO... Freddie did travel to the United States several times. Thats where he met Joe Fanneli, who just weeks before freddie died, was diagnosed with full blown AIDS, he met Fanneli in the late seventies. And went to several gay bars in New York.
