je parle un peux francais (well, i used to anyway!)

i knew german back in 3rd grade, which means i dont remember any of it >.<

and i can write and read arabic (but i couldnt tell you what it means :-p havent gotten that far yet)


what does this letter ß mean again ?

I think it's a short way of writing 2 S's together...like straße, instead of strasse. Street is one of the only words I remember from my trip to Germany.

It's not a short way, it's a distinct letter in its own right.

The 'ß' is called an 'eszett' and is lexically equivalent to 'sz' in English. As far as I know, it was originally formed by combining the 'long s'(which looked like an 'f' without the horizontal bar across the middle) and the 'short s'. Oh yeah and:

Anyway, some of you are doing it wrong on "I don't speak German"... while "Ich spreche nich Deutsch" is okay, "Ich spreche kein deutsch" is proper.

Not true. It's interchangeable with a double 'ss', it's only considered 'more right' than the double-s in some cases.

Oh, and when referring to the nazi-organization the Schutz Staffel, it is usual to use 'SS' and not a 'ß'

i really sympathiise with you, I LIVE in germany and its a bloody hard language to learn! knowing when to SPEAK polite, when to say sie sein ihn ihnen die der das is a hell of a lot to get your head around. i mean sometimes i struggle to speak english!
