It actually sounds very much like what they play live. Its 30 years since they did the operatic thing and 25 since the synth-pop, they wouldnt have done that now no matter what.

As far as returning to 'roots' go, nostaliga trips are inevitable; most musicians go that route, if they live long enough that is.
Hell, the oldies medley they did on the Magic tour was surely a sign that the guys in Queen were getting on in years...

Look people, Fred's dead and he's not coming back, not even as a zombie. I mean, they cremated him so unless zombies can rise from ashes then he's gone. And even if he was to somehow come back as a zombie, maybe with John Deacon using some black magic rituals or something, I don't think Fred would be in any fit shape to sing. In fact, according to the Zombie Survival Guide the most we're likely to get from him is some horrible moans. Let's face it, the only song that's likely to improve is Chinese Torture. And even if the movies are true and Fred was somehow able to utter the word "brains" that's hardly a recipe for future lyrical success. There's only so many ways you can incorporate "brains.....ugghhh....brains....uggghhh....brains...." etc into a song and still make it catchy enough to get played on Radio Two.

Yes, there are some songs which I don't care for as much as others, but some of the songs I really like. The album sounds good (sonically), and you can feel the rawness of a lot of the live takes going on. Compared to their contemporaries (the Rolling Stones for example), the album actually sounds fresh and modern, although with a classic song style.
Unfortunately by using the name Queen (I can see the pluses and minuses)a pre conceived idea is set as to what it should sound like, and therefore some fans, and virtually ALL critics, have made their mind up as to what it should sound like before listening to it.
I think that Roger and Brian should be congratulated for being 'brave' enough to deviate from their familiar style and sound and record the songs that they, together with Paul, wanted to. There are still moments like the solos on Voodoo and Still Burnin' that see Brian trying new things and new styles after all these years.
I'm not a huge fan of Paul Rodgers, and find his voice a little limited in terms of the styles he can tackle, but he sounds on form here. It would be interesting to look up some of Paul's website forums and see what his fans think, and how they compare it to his past material.

Well put...... if you are a fan of good music (rather than just Queen) you will like this album. It's lyrics are not great but the playing and singing are first class and no it is not in the league of the first 5/6 Queen albums but what is ?

His fans will say that the album is great of course,they can compare it with other albums,but we are Queen fans and some people may like it or not,we can´t compare this with any of Queen albums cos it´s a different thing,I don´t care too much what they think,I know what I think of the album.
