A silly question it is true, however at the risk of actually falling into a trap here... the simple reason is becuase it's a 50's-Elvis style song which were all basically about 2-3 mins long... simple
A bigger question would be "why is The Game so short? Of all the Queen albums it feels like it ends way too soon, particularly since it was well reported at the time that they had a number of songs that could have been worked up to a finished track, why leave this album feeling more like an EP than a full LP?

Maybe they wanted the album intentionally to be short so they could make the vinyl sound a little better (the larger the grooves the better the sound)?
About the 50's songs: the Honeydrippers album is probably the shortest album I've ever seen (or heard...): 22 mins.

Works is a great album!!! Better than The Game and Hot Space, tied with The Miracle and worse than AKOM...IMO! MOTP is a decent album track, I like Freddie's voice at the end...
I love Man on the Prowl, it's great. Interestingly every track on The Works appeared on a single as a UK a or b-side all within 1984, Queen had 5 hit singles that year including "Thank god It's Christmas", and the album got to number 2 you can't argue with that! Lester : ) P.S. I loved "I Go Crazy" too, it's Ace!

Radio ga ga (pop) tear it up (rock) hard life (operatic rock) MOTP (rock n roll) how many bands can play all those styles like queen did? Also, Lou, your favorite Queen album is "a day at the races" that album was basically a remake of anato, but I don't hear anyone complaining about that. I see the works as a middle of the road album, the 2 songs I don't like are tear it up and man on the prowl. The rest is good.

Only a musical moron compares "Play the Game" with "It's A Hard Life". The latter has far more in common with Bohemian Rhapsody, sans the rock section at the end. That's what it is; Bo Rhap, utilising only the ballad parts. People only compare it to "Play the Game" because "it's a haaaard life" sounds like "this is yoooooour life".

I like The Works alot. There is not one song on the album which I don't like, and many of them (Radio, IWTBF, KPTOW, Machines) are among my favourite Queen songs. But, what lets the album down for me is that it's too short and it doesn't seem like a coherent atudio album to me. There really aren't any 'quiet' songs; songs which are terrific but don't feel like hits. Almost all of the songs feel like hits and it comes across to me as too much of a collection of hits, rather than a unified work. That said, it's my second favourite album of the 80's (after The Game) and I think that Freddie was magnificent. [img=/images/smiley/msn/teeth_smile.gif][/img]

I think the Works had impact because of strong singles, great videos and, later, the tour. Two of the singles made it into the Live Aid selection. The rest of the album is fairly weak, only 9 tracks and a few 'remakes' as listed above.
If Radio Gaga had flopped that could well have been the end of Queen coming as it did after Hot Space and Back Chat making no. 40 in the UK.

Man On The Prowl is a great track - just listen to it and you'll find - it is completely finished song - no shorter, no longer - it's just OK

My first CD I have is from 2005 - A Night At The Opera with The Works - that was first ever rock'n'roll I've heard and all songs hit me very much. I still enjoy The Works - and Man On The Prowl is much better then CrazyLTCL
