I agree. F**k the digital downloads! CD Box set please.
The starting point with all these things is quite rightly the customer (ie us). In my view there is no doubt that a Roger box set would be a hard-core fans-only purchase. But guess what, there are several thousand of these, however the inevitability is that a box set would cost a few quid, but as has been said, this could be a mail-order only release which would may keep the cost down a little.
I would reckon that production of several thousand of these (let's say a limited edition of 3,000 for the sake of argument, could possibly easily more) I would be of the impression that there would be no problem in getting these sold.
Content-wise, given lets say the solo albums plus the 3 Cross albums and and 3 CD's of selected rare material that would give a neat 10 CD box - this could be 2 rarities CD's and perhaps a compilation DVD or various/selected Roger performances/videos/interviews (I quite like many aspects of the rarities suggested this far) I would like to see this supplemented with a very nice book featuring full original art work of all the albums and singles featured plus a selection of Roger pictures through the years with perhaps some write-ups by esteemed journalists or whoever.
Promotion-wise, this does not need too much simply as the fans network is pretty robust (official promotion could be via Queenonline).
The only real work required is a bit of copyright sorting out to put all the recordings in one box, the compliation of the bonus/rarities CD's, the obvious design effort and then simple factory production. Around a retail price of £100-£130 would be most probable for this.
I am sorry, but where there is a will there is a way and this project would definately break-even. The goal of this is not to cash in and make a huge profit (erm this is Roger so it probably would be) but to provide a really good legacy of his work outside Queen. This would be a superb addition to the hard-core fan's collection and definately sought after - 3,000 Roger fans worldwide - you betcha.
A similar effort could be put together for Brian of course (buy one, get one free???!!!)
Great topic for discussion incidentally!

Wow, I think that's the best thought out way of producing a fan-set I've seen yet.
The music is really what it's all about, but a nice set can really give you a feeling of value.
The Billy Joel 30th anniversary Stranger comes with heaps of fantastic text, and the booklet paper is photo-quality paper.
The Pink Floyd 40th Anniversary set of Piper at the Gates Of Dawn is very dissapointing in the inside. No text, and mostly dull photos.
The Freddie Box has to have the nicest book of anything I've seen. Cost a bloody fortune, but in hindsight is well worth it. I do agree that a major label probably wouldn't do it, but if they self-publish and sell online it could be brilliant.
A box for Roger's stuff like this would be amazing. I'd actually be happy with 1 solo and 1 cross and pay that kind of figure. The Cross have so much live stuff that it would be criminal for it not to come out in some way. From the look of the last tour where they were supporting Magnum, I think every song got an airing.
so, using this model, some extensive text from Greg, and 2 - 10-disc sets would we awesome.
I guess it would go something like
Pre-Fun In Space single and rarities
Fun In Space
Strange Frontier
80s singles and rarities
Happiness
Electric Fire
90s singles and rarities
Happiness Tour DVD
Electric Fire Tour DVD
RT music videos and tv performances
and then The Cross
Shove It
SI singles/rarities
Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know
MBaDtK singles/rarities
Blue Rock
BR singles/rarities
Shove It DVD
Mad Bad DVD
BR DVD
Cross Music Videos
Ok, as a fan, I'm sold :)
Even if they self publish, they can sell online, but also stock it on Amazon and cdnow. I love this idea a great deal. Queen always had the reputation for thinking outside the square, and trying new things. Maybe this isn't a pipe dream!

A Roger Taylor boxed set before a Queen boxed set.... the idea itself is fascinating.
Is the John Deacon boxed set going to come out before Queen's too?

I would like a Roger box set to contain...
1. All the studio albums
2. All the covers he's recorded (Keep A Knockin', Rock 'n' Roll, ect)
3. Unreleased songs of his
4. at least one concert of his (The Cross or just Roger)
5. Queen songs he wrote with him lead singing instead (Ride The Wild Wind, ect)

Pretty much have everything, demos, b-sides, unreleased, extended, retail, i mean come on, an Anthology? LOL Of Roger? lol. I love Rog to death, but my dear, a bit of waste of money for Rog to consider it.

The 4 Roger's albums each in deluxe Package, remastered with second disc full of B sides and 12" remixes. That will do for me.

Exactly. I would love it if the Queen albums also got this treatment. How great would something like this be?
MADE IN HEAVEN [DELUXE EDITION]
Disc 1 - Original album (SACD - 5.1/Stereo Mix)
Disc 2:
1. It's A Beautiful Day (1980 Demo)
2. Made In Heaven (Instrumental)
3. Let Me Live (Original 1983 Demo)
4. Mother Love (Alternate Version with Roger vocals)
5. You Don't Fool Me (Demo)
6. A Winter's Tale (Demo)
7. Mother Love (Demo)
8. It's A Beautiful Day (Single Version)
9. Too Much Love Will Kill You (Demo)
10. Heaven For Everyone (Instrumental)
11. You Don't Fool Me (Alternate Version with Roger vocals)
12. Track 13 (Remix for Queen Planetarium Show)
13. My Life Has Been Saved (1989 Version)
14. There Must Be More To Life Than This (1996 Remix by John Deacon)

No way the Smile stuff comes with a solo set. I would think it's fairly obvious it'd be part of a Queen box.
Pim Derks · Member since
Yeah, except that the Queenboxes are never going to happen while Brian is alive. And I think that if it's supposed to be a career-spanning anthology Smile should be included. I originally also had 2 or 3 Queen tracks on my tracklist - but scraped them, though I suppose IILWMC and Tenement Funster should be included in any RT-compilation.
Holly2003 · Member since
What's to stop him releasing demo versions of his Queen songs? Early demo versions of Tenement Funster, IILWMC, Radio Ga Ga etc would probably not feature other Queen members and would therefore still belong to Roger (and not be owned/copyrighted by Queen, if you see what I mean). No doubt Roger is as bored as us that Brian can't get his nose out of astronomy books long enough to do some proper archival research -- in the Queen vaults. I would buy an anthology with a bunch of Roger's Queen demos plus a live show. Can't say I'm that keen on The Cross though; their albums were dull and mediocre so imagine how bad those songs must be that didn't get released.

Ah, yes, The Reaction. I left them off my list, as I thought them too unlikely. Would be nice though!
Hilary Hilary? Interesting, hadn't come across that one before!
Nice cross section of stuff you have there! Always really liked Heartland. Would pull out the Smile stuff and put in a few more new tracks.
Nothing live?

Great track list there. Plus the studio albums, Cross stuff, live things. I would buy it, that's for sure.
I wonder if there's precedent of a band member releasing solo demos of songs that would later make it to Queen albums. I mean, I've never heard of that. Songs that didn't make albums, like Self Made Man, that's another story.
I wonder what Roger thinks of doing this, or if he prefers to look forward only and put together a new album.
Pim Derks · Member since
Pete Townshend released lots of demo's for Who-songs on his 'Scoop'-compilations. Great stuff. Would be awesome to hear Roger's original demo's of Ga Ga, Invisible Man, Breakthru, Wild Wind, Funster etc!
Daniel Nester · Member since
Yes yes yes Pim!
Forgot about the Scoop albums. I have 'em, too--how could I forget.
