After reading a lot of what is so called "Serious Discusion" on these pages which basiclly involves the "serious" Queen fans sending bitchy messages to each other ! I find this sort of topic where we can listen to each others opinons quite refreshing. If you don't Sod you !
Look at your post carefully.
You find your discussion 'refreshing' because it is not about Queen fans 'bitching' at each other, then you go and say 'Sod you' to me. Hypocrisy by any chance? When all I did was RIGHTLY point out that this is not QUEEN - SERIOUS DISCUSSION.
If you can tell me HOW voting for the top ten guitarists is SERIOUS DISCUSSION about QUEEN without bringing in what other people do in other threads, then I will accept your pathetic childish 'Sod you' outburst with humility.

Eek - no flame wars but I agree, it's a personal section thread.

ritchie blackmore - listen to late purple/early rainbow for how good he was, he also wrote most of purple's 70s songs
david gilmour - amazing
randy rhoads - played better on two "blizzard" albums than most managed in a lifetime
tom scholtz - that great boston analogue sound
eric clapton - god
george harrison - extremely under- recogonised - late 60s pioneer
gary moore - how did anyone leave him out?
edward van halen - he does stuff most an only imagine
alex lifeson - stunning in places

Good call! Tom Scholz created the Rockman Amp just like John Deacon made the Deacy Amp and it has helped out many a musician find the right tone for their guitars. Besides he had a really unique guitar tone courtesy of his self-made Amp. He was a qualified engineer I think, kind of like Deacon.
Really sad that Brad Delp died so soon and abruptly. I wasn't a big Boston fan but I have nice memories of listening to More Than a Feeling as a kid when I didn't know who it was by. :D

Saif, sorry for the off-topic, but I see you are from India. Do you have any sales number for Queen in India or any other Asian country?
The only thing I know is Queen's Greatest Hits is certified 1x Platinum(20,000 legal copies). That was an astonishing figure to me because Queen is not at all popular in India. The most foreign popular bands are Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi, Linkin Park, Dire Straits, ABBA and boy bands - Savage Garden, Westlife, Backstreet Boys, Blue, etc. Guns N' Roses also have a small fanbase.
Queen is in the lowest of low tiers in terms of popularity. Led Zeppelin isn't that well-known in India but they're more popular.
I'm pretty sure Michael Jackson's the only international artist who has sold more than 100,000 legal copies of any albums.
To be honest Rock music makes up less than 1% of all album sales in India. I'm not kidding. Most people buy crappy, cookie-cutter Movie soundtracks which consist of recycled pop crap.
Queen is much more popular in the rest of Asia, thankfully. Queen is arguably the most popular Western rock band in Japan, Korea and China. Possibly even Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries.

Saif, mate, thank you for your comment.
Do you have any specific figure for any Queen album, notably their hit packages, in any Asian country like Indonesia, China and Korea?
Also, would you mind letting me know your mail address? There is something I would like to ask you about, but this isn't the right place.

Well, based on technical skill, the ones I think to be among the best are:(not in any relevant order, they all rock)
1. Steve Vai
2. Joe Satriani
3. Paul Gilbert(when he was in Racer X)
4. John Petrucci
5. Yngwie Malmsteen
I think David Gilmour and Kirk Hammett are two of the
most overrated guitarists ever. I always feel that David Gilmour is
only praised because he was in Pink Floyd. Roger Waters was the real
genius in that group(and maybe Syd Barrett earlier on).
Based on technical skill I'll agree about Gilmour. But the fact that some (including me) praise him is
his extraordinary feeling (especially vibrato).
I'd really like to hear those 5 guitarists above playing the Another Brick in the Wall guitar solo
and compare. Even the solo from "The Final Cut" would reveal the difference.
Like Dave Mustaine said what Yngwie can do with 12 notes, Gilmour can do with one.

Have you listened to the "Comfortably numb" solo from the "Pulse" DVD? Do that, then come back to me if you still think that he´s overrated.

Listen to his solo album from 1984 called About Face, where he reveals that he is much bigger than Pink Floyd. Maybe it'll give you a different idea of the guy's capabilities.

Exactly... which is why I'll listen to Gilmour at least 12x more than either of those guys.

Andy Irvine, an Irish folk guitarist, could show some of the people mentioned here a thing or two.

Absolutely. He's an exceptional musician, with a wealth of work to show for it.

My usual fist choice is Jeff Beck but I really can never pick one guitarist as being better than the others because it can change on any given day. All it takes is one phrase that turns my ears inside out or evokes an emotional response.
Every guitarist mentioned in this thread, whose name I recognize, has my respect as a musician and some have influenced me as a musician.
I hope some of the guitarists(and other instrumentalists) on this forum will twist my ear with some good music.

Good to see that someone else likes him. A lot of people don't take him seriously because of the KFC bucket and mask. Me and my friends have had lots of fun in the past with KFC buckets. After finishing the chicken, we used to try and snap shots of ourselves dunking the bucket into unsuspecting friends. Good times. In the end, we all ended up with buckets on our heads once or twice at least. Buckethead rules.
And BTW, Major Tom, I know Gilmour has a lot of feeling in his playing. I consider the Comfortably Numb guitar solo the greatest guitar solo. Dave Mustaine is spot on with the 1 note = 12 notes for Gilmour comment but he really is over-rated as a technical player which is what I based my list on in my original post.
I'll stand by my original comment. David Gilmour isn't as overrated as say Kirk Hammett, though, who allegedly used all the guitar lessons he got from Satriani as riffs and solos in 'Tallica songs. When Joe found out, he stopped giving him lessons.

kirk hammet is overated, as is metallica in general. these little metallica fanboys think death magnetic is a great album, lol. If you want a great comeback metal album check out testament's "formation of damnation" the writing is way better than anything shitallica has done since 1989.

Same goes for Endgame- Megadeth. It's also a great album. Much better than most Metallica albums.

Yeah, I've heard that album. It's their first album in 9 years. Didn't think anyone in Queenzone would know Testament. You have good taste in music.
Indeed, Metallica sucks. FUCK METALLICA! HAIL MEGADETH. Metallica stopped making relevant music after 1986.
And of course, Megadeth's Endgame rocks! I had heard it nearly 20 days ago(it leaked). Original band albums are expensive here but Megadeth is a band I'm willing to support with money.
