My own criteria would be guitarist who can produce a very unique sound, that can identify as soon as you hear it....
So, Brian May would be in the list obviously (if not I would not be here on this forum !!).
But I think you could add Jeff Beck (good point Teleman), and Jimi Hendrix, without any doubt. Carlos Santana (Microwave's right), and Eric Clapton (God !).
I'm OK with Gilmour as a sixth name to this list, as well as Jimmy Page obviously. Malmsteen is very impressive, you're right Peter, even if I prefer Paul Gilbert, much more "fun".
Eddie Van Halen. Ritchie Blackmore. Steve Vai & Joe Satriani would be included, no matter what some think, if Jimi Hendrix is there, they contributed also a great lot to guitar playing. I only wonder how Steve Vai can produce those delicious sounds, no matter the quality of the SONGS, the quality of the MUSIC is far above a lot of the names quoted here, not only as far as technique is concerned but also regarding to the way it is written. A very special universe.
John Petrucci, I wonder why it took so many posts before his name appeared here ! One point for you Iiiibrahiiim.
Zakk Wylde and Slash would be there, but only in the top 20. Competition, men !!
But hey, I can't find some names here....
Steve Morse ?
Joe Perry ?
Nuno Bettencourt (sorry, I think he was already quoted by someone) ?
Steve Lukather ?
Stevie Ray Vaughn ?
John Lee Hooker ?
Buddy Guy ?
Well, for you Finnish out there, check this out :
www.guitarheroes.fi .
So goooood !!!! So faaaaast !!!
And maybe some can recall Vito Bratta ? Would have been a great guitar player too, had his carreer been a little longer. On your google... get set... go !!!
My thoughts go to Tesla's guitarists too, but maybe is it only their massive two-guitar sound...
Well, clearly, I am not a man for a Top 10, but more for a Top 20 !!!

Last night I remembered another example of a good guitarist being replaced by technically freak guitarist
and leaving the music behind.
In 1993(?) I was lucky to attend a Deep Purple Concert of their "Battle Rages On"(?) - Tour
with the one and only Ritchie Blackmore on guitar.
All the band was at one's best. Ian Gillan had an incredible voice this night and the setlist was great too ("Child in Time",..)
It was one of the top 5 concerts I've ever been.
I was standing in 2nd row. A friend of mine in the 1st and shaked hands with Blackmore. I'm still a bit jealous.
A few weeks later Blackmore and Gillan couldn't bear each other anymore so Blackmore left the band again and
was replaced by Joe Satriani for the rest of the tour.
Well, there are clips on Youtube about those concerts. You can watch them and decide who you prefer.
Can we make a poll?
Years later Steve Morse joined Deep Purple and I visited again a concert.
I arrived there with good mood but this time I left really disappointed.
Why he had to play pinch harmonics in almost every bar of "Smoke on the Water"? The solo I cannot remember...

Hey man,
you're much too kind!
I didn't quote John Petrucci (I made a copy-mistake...cause didn't know how to quote one's message)
It was Saif ...sorry Saif for misquoting;-)
but I quoted Bettencourt...and before I read your post I quoted Steve Morse (though not in a praising way)
and later I would have quoted Luke...cause I had a concert experience with Toto too.
But I don't like so much of their songs....

I could do that be stretching a piece of string across my living room.

"Metallica stopped making relevant music after 1986."
I think a definition is needed here. Name a Queen song that is relevant..

Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen, stuff like that. Anything between Queen I - The Game and then I suppose Innuendo only.
Sure, Metallica made some good and passable stuff after Master Of Puppets but most metal bands who claim influence from Metallica refer to the the 1981-86 period. The Black Album isn't even metal while ....And Justice For All was a watered down release compared to the MoP.

kirk hammet is overated, as is metallica in general. these little metallica fanboys think death magnetic is a great album, lol. If you want a great comeback metal album check out testament's "formation of damnation" the writing is way better than anything shitallica has done since 1989.

Yeah, I've heard that album. It's their first album in 9 years. Didn't think anyone in Queenzone would know Testament. You have good taste in music.
Indeed, Metallica sucks. FUCK METALLICA! HAIL MEGADETH. Metallica stopped making relevant music after 1986.
And of course, Megadeth's Endgame rocks! I had heard it nearly 20 days ago(it leaked). Original band albums are expensive here but Megadeth is a band I'm willing to support with money.

thanks, it's funny that kirk hamment gets mentioned as a great. How about testaments "scholnick" (Spelling?) he's a solid player with his own sound. I havn't listened to endgame yet, I'll have too check that one out. I do like megadeth much better than metallica these days.

Alex Skolnick takes Kirk Hammett to the cleaners in every way. He is a brilliant player.

Yeah, like Sir GH has said Skolnick runs circles around Hammett. The sad thing is, today's retarded emo kids swoon all over Kirk Hammett like he's some sort of Guitar Lord... I remember I got into a mini-fight on YouTube with this 14 year-old metalcore scene freak just because I posted a link to Judas Priest's Breaking the Law asking him to learn about real metal after he commented that "ENTER SANDNAM IZ SO FCKIN DEEP NIGGA! BEST MEDAL RIFF EVER"(he was apparently talking about the first rhythm fill on that song). That kid was clearly retarded though, he posted on a Morbid Angel video(a death metal band) saying, "OMG!!! GAY!!! WHEREZ DA FUKIN BR00TAL SLAMZ MAN!? HOW KEN IT BE DETH METIL WITHOUT SLAMMIN BRAKEDOWNS?!?" Goddamn mallcore fags(I mean that with no offense to gay people) and their obsession with breakdowns.

Dave Mustaine is GOD. Skin O' My Teeth has helped me through tough times. A Tout Le Monde usually does that for most people but I love hanging on to the skin of my teeth. :P
It's a shame that Endgame entered the Billboard Charts at #9 with 45k copies sold. Dave Mustaine deserves a #1. What Endgame sold is 1/10th of the first-week sales of Death Magnetic, an infinitely inferior album.
It's a shame Slayer's new album seems like it's going to be crap. I had my hopes up for that one.

Endgame didn't hit number 1?????
CRAP. What does a good band have to do to get a number 1?????????? There isn't a bad song on that album. This country (America) is the worst when it comes to music.

a little love for my man skolnick, I love it. I guess his best is "the new ordor" but the first 3 testament albums were great. also live in london he shows what he's made of. Hopefully he stays in testament for a another album or two. you mentioned slayer, I'm not giving up on the new album yet. I heard 2 songs. One decent song, but that hate worldwide tune doesn't do anything for me.

We were talking about Zakk Wylde... He has just announced that he parted company with Ozzy Osbourne. So we should now follow Black Label Society, and see what happens !

I'm pretty sure Michael Jackson's the only international artist who has sold more than 100,000 legal copies of any albums.
To be honest Rock music makes up less than 1% of all album sales in India. I'm not kidding. Most people buy crappy, cookie-cutter Movie soundtracks which consist of recycled pop crap.
