I bow to your vastly superior ears, Bohardy! I described that track as containing 'Pseudo-trumpet fanfares', which I think proves that I am no musicologist.
Speaking of Bowie and his sax, could he be responsible for the part on 'Action This Day'? Seems to me that it would be somewhat of a coup for Roger to get Bowie playing on one of his tracks.

Ha, thanks Ian. I was gonna reference your description of the pseudo trumpets.
I'm pretty sure the sax on ATD has been confirmed to be synth, played by Morgan Fisher I think. So sadly no Bowie there.

Does anyone have the Rock Band 3 stems for Don't Stop Me Now and Bohemian Rhapsody, are they're the only ones I have trouble finding.

Dig through this thread.

@kosimodo, where in this thread? I can only see stuff about actual leaked multitracks, and there's a old Blogspot page for some RB stems linked here, which includes a low-quality version of Bohemian Rhapsody. I am 100% sure a proper rip would have 8 tracks and not 4, and every page about Don't Stop Me Now's multitracks go to the Talenthouse stems (which for some reason match the album mix).
However, I still need that version of One Vision with only Freddie Mercury's vocals.

I can't remember if I've said this before - I certainly meant to years ago - but what I find ASTOUNDING, is that since the Rock Band stems of UP came out, and even more pointedly now we have the full multitracks, which people are discussing in detail, I've not seen it mentioned once that there is a real, actual, goddamn saxophone on the track (Audio 10 on the multis).
It's slightly buried in the final mix, and not easy to distinguish as sax, since there are another couple of tracks with synthy sounds playing similar line, but it's always been there. And the stems and multitracks reveal it clearly.
So, of course, the question is, can we reasonably assume that it was Bowie that played the part? I think we can. But why has this never been documented anywhere? I think it's pretty big news.

Indeed, there is sax ! Yet another reason why listening to this stuff is like learning how the pyramids were built.
A bit of the mystique is lost, but I think most would agree that the benefits outweigh that loss.

it has its pros and cons, certainly. but the serious "wow" moments can be stunningly simple or simply stunning.

Wasn't the sax credited to a Dino Solera? Morgan only played the sax part on synths during the live perfomances.

That's the beauty of multitracks. Put them all in a DAW, and it's like watching how the different parts of the human body work. And stuff like the alternate vocal takes. It's like listening to the song for the first time.

He wasn't credited, but as far as I know, he did play them both (alto and tenor, IIRC).
As for 'Under Pressure', when Bowie died Roger's techie posted something about him (Bowie) recording a sax part for 'Cool Cat' a day or so after the 'People on Streets' session. My theory: he may have misremembered (it was 35 years later anyway) and the sax was actually for 'People on Streets' (later renamed 'Under Pressure') instead.

Sorry, my mistake re the sax on ATD. Misread and misremembered something from another site. Didn't think it was a synth at all, so should have questioned that before I made my hasty point.
Your theory makes sense Seb, though I could easily imagine the sax parts on UP, being so minor, had been missed/forgotten about by the techie. And I could equally easily imagine some sax parts on Cool Cat which, on the face of it, would seem a more natural home for that instrument than UP.

Bob, I remember David Richards talking about the UP 'Classic Queen mix'. That version dates from the original mixing sessions of the song.

Any links for the UP/FBG multitracks?
Listening online via YouTube isn't the same as being able to listen + mess about yourself!
