All my favourite sports are being banned -- foxhunting, bullfighting, badger baiting -- what's next? All I have now is my Tuesday night monkey knife fights.

Another pointless "sport".One for the blood thirsty.
Honestly,i'd love to see them that love to go to these bullfights have spears chucked in their backs.
A few of them in here need that done to them.
Do you want to name them?

Such irony in bullfighting in that the lives of those young cows chosen to be raised for the fight are incalculably better and longer that livestock animals. They all end up together in the butcher shop in the end, excepting the rare reprieve for 'bravery', but the livestock animals typically have it infinitely worse over the course of their shortened, restricted, usually unnatural lives.

It would be a fairer contest if the bulls had jockeys -- not human jockeys -- that would be ridiculous-- monkey jockeys, possibly also armed with a sword or maybe a little whip, or a polo mallet. And the monkeys should wear a motorcycle helmet. Or a fez. Whatever. The headwear's not really a deal clincher. Any animal rights activist would agree the addition of a monkey jockey would even things out and make for a happy compromise between animal rights and human entertainment. I'll email brian, ask him what he thinks.

How fucked up mentally would someone have to be to enjoy an animal being tortured to death. I don't care if you are a vegetarian or not (and for the record I'm not), but the fact that this is considered a tradition, an art, or a sport is way beyond me.
Sure, most of us eat meat, but we expect animals to the very least have a quick death with the least amount of prolonged suffering possible. I like the way 'Avatar' puts the issue of hunting for food as part of a cycle in which we hold respect for the creatures we will be consuming. Killing animals for a sport, leisure or entertainment is just sickening.

Nobody here hates as much as you do.

I completely agree. I think it's great that Catalonia has banned bullfighting as IMO killing and torturing animals for sport or entertainment should no longer be tolerated.
Here in Melbourne, there is debate every year as to whether or not duck hunting should still be allowed. Apart from the fact that the duck hunters kill for leisure, one of the worse things is that many of them are bad shots. Fox hunting, cockfights, bullfighting etc and other such 'sports' mystify me as to why people could find them entertaining.
I'm not a member of PETA, I agree completely with GratefulFan about Brian's alienating tactics, and I don't always ask whether my meat comes from factory farms or not; but I do care about animal rights, and I think that banning bullfughting is a great step forward in animal rights.
That said, it doesn't surprise me. It doesn't seem to be as popular with the younger generation, who are generally more aware of animal rights than previous generations. As a tradition, it also seems to be less popular with the younger generation. I would imagine that in the next few decades, other regions will follow suit.

Another bloody sport that should be banned is boxing. This involves human beings but people seem to care more about animals.

There is a saying that when you point a finger at someone, one finger (the thumb) points to heaven, and three fingers point back to yourself.
Don't shoot me - I am only tresspassing :-)

I saw this news a couple of days ago and was thrilled. It boggles the mind how people can enjoy watching animal torture... and further stuns me how supposedly civilized societies can allow it in the first place. I doubt it'll happen but do hope the rest of Spain soon follows suit.
