In the early '80's I worked in animation and sometimes we shot footage in either 8mm or 16 mm (latter was a Bolex camera) as reference footage - in both those gauges of film you had about 3 minutes of footage you could shoot before you had to reload with new stock. The sound stripe on 8mm stock was pretty poor - 16mm was better. With that stock you had the choice of using 16mm sound magnetic tape which you could sync exactly with the film. Bands sometimes used/played this alongside the corresponding 16mm film. When Advision studios was being cleared out I was there and asked if I wanted the Pink Floyd 'Live at Pompeii' magnetic sound tape to accompany the film. I declined and it was very likely thrown out into a skip.

Now I was of the impression that most people knew about this recording and it had been shared between collector's in recent years. I got a copy of this version of 'Tie Your Mother Down' from a keen video footage collector when I worked at the hotel with Peter 'Feebie' Freestone at the end of the '90's. I'm sure there are others out there who have this footage, I wouldn't of been the only one to of traded for this.

WOW!!!! I can't believe all the discussion on this film.

My name is Dan Cuny.  I was the person that filmed this show in San Francisco. At the time, I worked at a camera store at the time. I was always photographing concerts with my still camera but decided to try to a sound movie for this show. My girlfriend (now wife of almost 35 years) hid the camera in her purse as it was somewhat cumbersome with a mic. on the top of the camera. As always, I got to the front of the stage, and this was the opening song. The difficulty was the films were limited to just 3 minutes. I also have another 3 min. film of the band, but it's not nearly as good as it's somewhat out of focus at times, and many people in front.
I believe the show was in March of 1977 with Thin Lizzy. I have many still images from the show as well as a few other Queen shows I attended. If you are interested in more information, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,
Dan Cuny

Nice to see you here Dan.

Thanks a lot for shooting the footage and making it public !  Hopefully you can share the other three minutes of footage as well.  Many people would love to see it, no matter the quality or obstructions.

Do you recall Freddie Mercury losing his voice during the show?  In a 1981 interview he recalled it like it was yesterday -  "In San Francisco I lost my voice and it was awful. My register was limited to virtually a monotone. I still gave it my all but I knew it was a bad performance."

Clearly he hadn't lost his voice in the first song, as he sounds great on the video.
