Good points raffy - however it is all down to taste. I remember those DR tracks sounding somehow dated upon release. Perhaps that's understandable for MIH, but Innuendo not so much. I think the only Queen album of the 80s that sounded current was The Miracle which sounds ludicrous now.

As pointed out, production styles ages, not songs and instumentation. I think Mack's stuff hasn't aged purely down to the stripped down 'live' feel of most tracks. The fact that the more electronic parts of HS have aged almost backs that up even though it is by the same team .And lets not forget Shove It :o)

Another point to make is that the failings as perceived of any producer do not reflect on them. Recordings aging is the curse of rock and always unavoidable to a point.

Also, Jazz is a great sounding record although I'm alone in thinking that.

I prefer Mack to David Richards.

The singles from the Mack era sould alot more polished compared to the Miracle/Innuendo.

Mack did great production on princes of the universe. Excellent sound, edit etc. Also in terms of production Hot space especially Back chat, life is real is great. He also make their drums sound and synth drums sound better than most other acts or groups of 80s. They sound more realistic. Now if it is dated or not is another factor, but most of 80s pop rock music is dated. Few exceptions. Even in heavy metal the drums sound dated. Moreover I believe he capture Freddie vocals very well.

David Richard's was a different kind of producer. I don't like the Miracle production, it ruins many songs. But Innuendo is far better.

Hmmm I stand by what I said originally - The 'rock' stuff on the DR albums sound as muddy as Jazz is accused of being. I think that might be due to the changing tech and dubious effects decisions by the band though.

I'm with Mack.

The production from 1979-84 produced the best sounding records. It's no coincidence Billy Squire had his two biggest records during that time period under Mack. David Richards was the right personality for the band from 1986 - onward. Remember, Mack produced Mr.Bad Buy alongside The Works. I'm sure that did not sit well with the other three guys. Richards was a well rounded producer, but nothing special, no signature sonic contribution to my ears.

I’ve always prefered Mack...his production style brought disco to the masses

I don't understand the love for The Miracle. The production is just awful by and large. Not the whole album but most of it is so synthetic and dated. A horrible 80's synth sound yet so much love for it on here.

You're spot on regarding the horrible 80's synth sound. Queen never had shown any taste when it came to synths. The synth-sound in the intro to „Show Must Go On“ is just awful pseudo-pomp in an otherwise excellently arranged song. Never understood the various lapses of taste in Queen-recordings post „Jazz“. Regardless of who co-produced them with the band. Justin Shirley-Smith is by far the sexiest producer Queen ever had. But that's another story...

80’s and 90’s Queen are much more interesting to me than Queen in the 70’s

The synth sound on TSMGO has foreboding. So I rather think it fits.

Ever imagined how it would have sounded with real strings or really well sampled strings instead of these cheesy sounding pre-set-sound-strings? But I get what you mean by using the word "foreboding“.
