Side White or Side Black?

Side 2. The whole white/black thing could well be the most pretentious thing that Queen ever did.

Side B! It's a remarkable album. Sure they did better ones later, and showed more variety within one release later, but Queen II stands as a point in time when Queen was just like WOAH.

I just love both sides, but my fav is the black one. I love the way that the end of a song is the beginning of another

Can't pick a side. And actually I LOVE Some Day One Day. Particularly on the remaster.

No contest, side black - never consider listening to side white I'm afraid, it didn't grab me then and it doesn't now

Side Black for sure! Side White starts off brilliantly, but then really becomes weak with some Day One Day and Loser In The End.

I don't get why people don't like Some Day One Day, which I find to be beautiful, but don't mind Funny How Love Is? When I was first listening to the album, I would definitely have said Side Black is the best, but now I think I have to give the very narrow edge to Side White just because FHLI pisses me a little bit. The whole album is pretty bloody brilliant, though, and I don't hate FHLI that much.

Hmm, I have to agree. Some Day One Day, while not outstanding, is very nice. Also makes good use of the three guitar parts each playing a different melody, rather than harmonizing with one another.

I like the entire of Queen II, but then I've always listened to it on CD (the original EMI release).

I recently bought the 2011 remaster and I just can't listen to it. The dynamics have been ruined. For example at the start of Procession the kick drum now halves in volume the moment the guitar comes in. It makes no musical sense like that, and certainly wasn't what the band intended because the original EMI release CD and the original LP aren't like that.

Wow.. that IS a tough choice, I remember the first time I listened to Queen II and I honestly did NOT like it at all.. didn't matter what side (it WAS vinyl btw) but I still listened to it and slowly it grew on me.. and the White side is what won it over for me for White Queen, Loser in the End, and Father to Son being the big game changers.. of course I begun to love everything on both sides, although FHLI wasn't as gripping.

so for the record.. White side for me.. but do NOT get me wrong, I totally LOVE the whole album now.. doesn't matter which side.. especially now that it is CD and there are no sides.. lol

I'd have to say side Black.

The only thing I don't like about the White side is Loser In The End. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great song, It just doesn't seem to me that it fits with the rest... That's really the only thing I can say I'm not too fond of on the whole album.

I don't get why so many people don't like Some Day One Day, I suppose it's not as powerful as the other songs but I think its a beautiful song.

It really is a brilliant album.

totally different in style, so not easy to compare. For me, the white side feels "warmer". Father to son is just great. The black side is more art rock. The album as a whole is great

Queen II is, and has been my favorite Queen album since I became a fan in '76/'77. Hard to decide which side is my favorite but I'll have to go with Side White. I love the intro to Father to Son and Father to Son has to be one of their most underrated songs - just a crushing rock fest.
White Queen is really good too although I wish they could have captured the interplay between Freddies piano and Brians guitar live and put that on the record - stunning work in the Rainbow and Hammersmith live versions.
Some Day, One Day has always been one of my favorites. As mentioned in an earlier post the guitars in the background are beautiful; kind of remind me of the way Jimmy Page used the guitar in the background on two Zep tracks from Led Zep III - Tangerine and especially That's the Way. Those guitars add such a nice flourish to Some Day, One Day that I can listen to the song just to hear them and in fact that's kind of a Brian thing to do on a lot of songs - the guitars in the background weaving a nice pattern that complients the song as a whole.
Loser in the End is a bit of a shock to the system after hearing the first threes songs on Side White but taken as a stand alone song it's quite good so I give it a pass on that.
I love Side Black also but there's just something about the underlying emotions in Father to Son, White Queen and Some Day, One Day that just gets me and won't let go.
