" pleased some of the old ones who were on their wavelength, and committed to anything they do and did."

Crap... the old ones (fans) who bought it were committed to it because they were old committed fans.

Its a terrible album, even the good songs sound awful due to the production.

I'm surprised anyone thinks POTF is one of the best songs on the album, the production here is terrible and the lyrics and riff completely uninspired, its purely filler, one of Brian's shittiest songs overall.
'Calling All Girls', on the other hand, I would consider one of the better songs, and it's nearly always overlooked.

Staying Power - 80's Club song.. terrible
Dancer - Musically OK, lyrics suck
Back Chat - Rubbish
Body Language - Too sexy for its own good... hate it
Action This Day - Nice one
Put Out the Fire - A bit over produced.. reminds me of Princes
Life Is Real (Song for Lennon) - nice ballad
Calling All Girls - great song
Las Palabras de Amor (The Words of Love) - Musically immaculate
Cool Cat - why? never want to hear it again
Under Pressure - Great!

So only 4 out of 11 songs are rubbish.. Slap on Soul Brother and you have a short but decent album i.m.o.!!!

I love Cool Cat. Genuinely.

I hated it, then I finally got it. Listen to the singing! Amazing.

This is about HOT SPACE.... Not A Night At The Opera.  (Seaside Rendezvous)

And I believe that was Roger.

I like Back Chat and Cool Cat :P You can't really cite poor production as a reason you don't like one of the songs (if that's what you were doing in the case of Put Out The Fire), considering all of them are badly produced so you kind of just have to not factor it in if you want to find anything good in the album. I generally consider (most of) the tracks good songs which are horribly presented.

and what rubbish to say they held onto their established fans...they lost a whole continental fan base because of this album (north america)

I like what was the first side to Hot Space (yes, the funk side). Not at first though. I hated it with a passion back then.

But Staying Power, Dancer and Back Chat to me are top songs now, whatever genre they are in. Body Language, Action This Day, Put Out The Fire and Life is Real aren't too bad, but then Calling All Girls, Las Palabras de Amore and Cool Cat are some of my least favourite Queen songs in their career.

I also don't think Under Pressure should have been on there at all. Somehow its never fit for me on there, despite being a hit from a year earlier. Just seems to me like they put it on there to fill up space on the album.

Patently false. Queen have never ever lost fans, no matter what they did. The only fans they may have ever lost were those who piled on for the disco! with things like another one bites the dust number 1 single, those people would have liked hot space.
But the True Fans of Queen never gave up on them .
I mean how could you reject an album like hot space?
if you never bought it?
To be honest, i think the only ones who got upset by hot space
were the cross-over fans, who were equally thrilled to see Status Quo support acts and the like.
They were not really Royal family , they were just general rock fans and liked queen amongst other rock bands but exclusively devoted Royal fans, TRUE QUEEN FANS IN OTHER WORDS, ACCEPTED EVERYTHING THEY DID- While they were full Queen.
That is me anyway.

As I see it, people who make remarks like this are only one step away from joining a cult.

Hi brENski
I also would only rate Hot Space ahead of A Kind Of Magic. In relation to the band's success in the US, Hot Space certainly wouldn't have helped, that's for sure. But the other thing I have heard that might have been a factor in Queen's subsequent disappearance in the US was the fact that the four of them didn't tour there any more after 1982. Think I heard on the recent Days of our Lives video that Freddie only wanted to tour if they had a hit, but to have a hit it often helps to tour. Sort of a chicken and egg thing. I also recall them saying that it took 7 years for Queen to conquer America. Then they seem to have let that market wither and die by ignoring it up until Queen stopped touring in 1986.

First post on a Queen forum since the 1990s, please excuse any short hand as i am on a smart phone. I just finished relistening to this album and am of the opinion that the band didn't suddenly stop making good songs but rather Hot Space was merely a victim of the "album concept." With a little better direction this could have been a good album. However, I do remember feeling like I had been slapped in the face the first time I had heard it-- not the feeling I was looking for.

Staying Power -- this is the one dance track I would leave as is. Good start to a disco album.

Dancer -- the lyrics are weak, but I like the song. Would really benefit from a more traditional Queen treatment.

Back Chat -- this seems like a classic Queen track gone horribly wrong. See "Dancer"

Body Language -- this song gets a bad rap because it is a poster child for a poor album. Would have better received if it was on another album, reminiscent of Get Down, Make Love.

Action This Day -- Re-record this without the programming and Roger would have really had something

Put Out the Fire -- I can't believe they tried passing themselves off as an apolitical band when they got in trouble over sun city. The lyrics really seem phoned in and forced. Was much better once it was reworked into Hammer to Fall

Life Is Real -- the only original track I can say I liked upon first listening, don't change a thing.

Calling All Girls -- another victim of the digitized sound, too bad reminded me of some of the better early deep cuts-- Misfire, Tenement Munster, She Makes Me, Funny How Love Is. I think it's the open chords.

Las Palabras de Amor -- good track, sounds like it came off A Day at the Races. Very sugary, unusual for a Queen ballad to no be about a broken heart.

Cool Cat -- A decent funk track, not dance like the rest of the album. I think this is the best we could expect from this one.

Under Pressure -- a bonus track. It doesn't belong, but queen was right to put it on an album for the fans, much like the Beatles did with strawberry fields.
