Oh, and that festival in Australia in the '74. Not sure how big it was...

Australia is currently 2,969,907 sq miles. I imagine it was around that size back in '74, give or take a few sq miles.

They pulled the plug because metal fans, unsurprisingly, didn't want to see Queen + Adam Lambert, so none of them bought tickets. (...)

I find hard to believe that nobody bought tickets because of Queen + Adam Lambert. I think its safe to assume that there were many issues at the time, and one of them MAY (or MAY NOT) be Q+AL specially because people not interested in the headliner has happened in many festivals.
The Rock Am See Festival 2009 comes to my mind... When Oasis cancelled their gig and the promoter got Deep Purple (!!!) as replacement for those who wanted to keep the ticket and offered refund for those who werent interested.

No, it was Kiss too. They barely even qualify as famous in the UK, not popular enough for a festival headliner over here, not a festival that big. So when 2 of 3 nights are a dud, that's a big problem.
This year they had Iron Maiden & Metallica, now they are Sonisphere headlining material.

Uh..........Live Aid would count as a big festival, wouldn't it??

Yes, but I didn't say Queen aren't big enough for Sonisphere, I said Kiss aren't big enough.
Queen + Adam Lambert are obviously plenty big enough to headline a festival that size, but they aren't really the Sonisphere crowd's cup of tea. Half the bands are Thrash metal.
Do keep up.

I suppose the thing about Glastonbury is, because it's deemed so big and important would Brian and Roger think this is the pinnacle of their touring post Freddie?
In other words, would they see this as the final big concert to go out on in the UK? Would next year be late enough for both of them to end touring or will they want to go on in 2016 and beyond? To end on an high would be great for them but would they not want to delay the 'bookend' touring of Queen+ until later?

I can't see them saying 'get back to us next year..' If Glastonbury offered, they'll do it. They wouldn't want to miss the opportunity and they never know with their health, etc..
