What do you guys think is the best Queen concert ever?

I wouldn't count Live Aid as it wasn't a Queen concert per se. Of course they sounded phenomenal but, then again, they were only performing for twenty minutes. Freddie wouldn't have managed to hit all the high notes had he been on a two-hour-long show, as 700+ Queen concerts show.

Of course our perspective is limited by what we can hear or analyse via the, again limited, corpus of released and/or leaked audios and videos, but that doesn't mean we can't have an opinion about whatever little we know. That's the beauty of historical research.

Personally, I'd choose one from the Crazy Tour. They were quite great, full of energy, intimate enough, dynamic enough (with Fred playing guitar on one track and Bri playing piano on another), all of them in great shape, and even their outfits were quite nice.
John hated Hot Space. Frederick's favourite singer was not Paul Rodgers. Roger didn't compose 'Innuendo.' 'Bohemian Rhapsody' hasn't got 180 vocal overdubs.

Some Hot Space shows were really good and Works shows at Wembley and Birmingham were very slick, loud and powerful.

I don't get it. How is extreme loudness a good thing? It's what completely ruins live music for me.

I believe you could be confusing loud and powerful with loud and distorted. A bad sound usually sounds louder than a good clear sound. I've recently being working on a classical production of The Flying Dutchman. There are 48 chorus singers, male/female divided into two groups, an 80 piece orchestra and six lead vocal performers. The production is completely acoustic, no amplification, and has being playing in halls of about 2500. Last week there was a db meter in the venue which measured 108 db's in the loudest sections. The power and volume generated by the performers is mind blowing in places and adds too (and is part of) what
Wagner was trying to achieve. Are you going to claim that a classical orchestra should be quieter and classically trained singers shouldn't use their voices.

I'd like to find out the following: what is the best concert recording in the archive? ?
Id est: what is there in existence that can blow us of our feet in the same way as the Rainbow 74 set did?

Regarding this topic: I agree with the Wizard...

If they only had some Crazy Tour gigs in the archive, that would be the best one for me. Great tour with a great setlist.

I certainly do hope so.
Let's face it: a truly extensive 1979 box would be the ultimate Queen live product, only a 1977 box can compete with that. I have good hope we'll see both one day.
One show I'd like to see complete and in best audio and video possible is the Hammy '79 concert and I think many Queen fans agree with me. Fingers crossed as they have been for many years now :-)

My personal favorite is the 5-1-75 Tokyo show....not quite the best quality, but a great performance and setlist (Hangman, and See What A Fool I've Been! not to mention extra long versions of Son & Daughter and Liar)....
I'll take you to the Seven Seas of Rhye

Oh yes, that one is a true favourite of mine too! It seems to have it all: great setlist, great atmosphere, great playing...
One of those special gigs.

Yeah, that's a great gig. Hard to pick favourites from all those stunning gigs from the 70's. Back when Queen always put the music first.

I'm going to put my neck out for Tokyo 4/23/1979 here. Although Freddie's voice isn't in the best shape, the other band members were absolutely perfect. Freddie's vocal improvs are also great, and his vocal shape is much better than some later Japan concerts.

Doncha mean a TRULY **EXPENSIVE 1979 box?

I too think they reached a peak around 77-81 the rig, The performances whether jazz tour or crazy Tour, variance in set lists, costumes, just overall performance.

Again. Wish they'd do what KISS did with KISSOLOGY. Compile complete concerts, show appearances, interviews etc into something fantastic per era. All under $30

If they'd compile a 1979 box with several hours of unseen and unheard stuff (Paris concerts, Hammy79, audio from other Live killers and Crazy Tour shows), then I'd gladly pay... Don't care about the price. If the box is as magnificent as tha Rainbow box, then I'd be over the moon.
