But let's call a spade a spade - the 70s is when Queen were most critically acclaimed, and Mercury wrote most of the biggest songs:

Killer Queen, BoRhap, Somebody To Love, Champions, Bicycle Race, Don't Stop Me Now, Crazy.

Without those, Queen wouldn't have been on the map.

As far as the man on the street is concerned - with the exception of WWRY, pretty much everything else is secondary.

Bullshit. They have been putting on a good show, and most hardcore Queen fans (including me actually) have appreciated their effort with Lambert.

I agree. But, things are not as simple as that.
Its not as if Freddie (or Brian, Roger or John) had everything written and the rest of the members were some kind of session musicians without any input on how the final product would be. In fact I think it was Freddie the one who said that the creative process within the band was hard because everybody had a huge input in every song.

That's the reason why they shared credits for songwriting years later.

Now, as far as the man in the street is concerned, Queen is Freddie and Brian. Nobody cares at all for Roger... And most of them doesnt know about John.

I keep forgetting that Brian is a big deal in the UK.

In North America he isn't a household name. Outside of big Queen fans and musicians, people don't know who he is.

I can't lie - that makes me sad. His importance to rock music cannot be overstated.

Well, from what i read and saw in the news, the average guy in USA loves guns and think the Earth is 6000 years old, so maybe is not bad that Brian is not the taste of everybody there.

Wrong on three levels, at least....

1. Lambert's not an imitator, at all
2. Their reputation isn't ruined
3. Lambert isn't a 'nobody'. He's pretty much a household name.

Not at all.
I'm just saying that they aren't legendary.

While still alive, Freddie was the undisputed frontman of the band. He was gracious enough to say they were all equal, but that just wasn't true by any standards.

But what really made Freddie (and the whole band) legendary was his death.


It's simply a contradiction in terms to give a "living legend" award for the merits of somebody who's been dead for decades.

It's like giving a "lifetime achievement" award for anartist's first demo record, or "best newcomer" award to somebody who's already had a fifty year career.

Not even close. Freddie and Queen were loved long before he died. They were a talented and successful band. Do yoy know how hard is to find someone talented and successful at the same time in the show busines.

If any, Freddie's death triggered the nostalgia and the What could have been? scenario.

Well, it all depends on how do you describe "equal"

Yes, the first hits were song written by Freddie, but the rest of the band had a lot of input in some songs (Brian calls it "seal of approval") we know Freddie wrote SSoR and we know Brian wrote "the middle eight" (IIRC, there are 2 on the song, so I dont know which one he's talking about) and the solo on Killer Queen was also written by Brian and according to him, they all "worked very hard in the lyrics for Its a Hard Life" we dont know what would happened if Queen didnt had John, Roger or Brian but its a fact that the music would be totally different and Queen II would be an EP instead of a full album and there would not be Radio GaGa which is the song that kind of made Queen being relevant once again. How Queen would sound if we remove any of the 3 remaining members? We can only speculate...

Yes, Queen is not Queen without Freddie but at the same time, there's no Queen without Brian's orchestral sound or the vocal choir made by Brian, Freddie and Roger.

Even Freddie "stole" part of the Queen (Smile) sound for his solo records! And we must remember that about 50% of the Queen sound was already present in Smile but it wasnt present in any of Freddie's previous bands.

Yes, Freddie deserves to be called legend but that doesnt mean that John, Brian or Roger were some kind of second rate musicians.

At least, that's my opinion.
