A Night At The Odeon - video edits?

In the documentary it is said that the concert was broadcast live in stereo on Radio 1, however, as far as I know a stereo recording of the rock & roll medley in the original BBC mix has never emerged? Also during the Bob Harris intro he mentions "many people watching at home on television" but no mention of listening on the radio in stereo. The most damning piece of evidence is that the schedules for that day list the TV broadcast but not a radio broadcast? Radio 1 is listed "as Radio 2" and Radio 2 is broadcasting Johnny Mathis at the time?

Does anyone know for sure if the simulcast actually took place or is this just another Queen myth?

Depending on the length of that, I would watch it :)

Actually it was Roger missing a queue and "fucking it up".

I would be interested in that but it seems like a lot of work, have you done it already?

I'll be definitely doing it for myself later this week, that's why I wanted to know if this kind of stuff is interesting for more people than just me.[/QUOTE]

In case you´re doing it for yourself i would be interested in it too Pittrek.

Yes, pittrek, please!!! We want it!
That time will come, one day you'll see, when we can all be friends... ("The Miracle", Queen, 1989)

Yes I'd be keen to see a comparison!

Perhaps the Radio recording was made for later broadcast and that fact is muddled as time has past. Any evidence for the first audio broadcast of the gig? And was it complete (IE Seven Seas Of Rhye etc) or did the bootlegs featuring those simply come from someone running off a copy of the master?

Yes dysan I think it was recorded for later broadcast and unfortunately edited down for a 1 hour time slot so, therefore, it has never been complete. It was probably a good idea to replace the rock & roll medley with SSOR & SWAFIB as it gave the radio listener original Queen songs and something different to the TV broadcast - this is the version that was rebroadcast many times.

I think that if there really had been a simulcast someone would have recorded it but as far as I know a stereo recording of the rock & roll medley in the original BBC mix has never seen the light of day, video recording equipment was rare in 1975 but audio recording equipment was commonplace. I believe the evidence points to the simulcast being a myth but I could be wrong, who am I to argue against Bob Harris, Brian May and Roger Taylor!!!

Dysan to answer your question about the first broadcast, the first time I can actually find it on the Radio 1 schedule is 28th February 1976:

http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/radio1/england/1976-02-28

As you can see it's got a 1 hour time slot so it must have been edited, the whole show (including the Bob Harris intro) was approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.

I believe you are correct - it's not on the Radio 1 schedule for Dec 24.

Brian and Roger aren't scholars of their own history. Looks like you've got this one right.

Thanks for digging up this important piece of the history ! Well done.

Thank you for that Real Wizard, I didn't want to be right, a live simulcast would have been great. Like a lot of fans over the years I always wanted to replace the mono sound on the video with the original BBC stereo mix but I was never able to do it properly because of missing audio primarily the first encore.

To be fair it is Bob Harris who says it was broadcast live in stereo on Radio 1 and Brian and Roger politely go along with it. Bob did introduce "the first rock music show on TV to have stereo sound on VHF radio" in 1974 so maybe he is getting confused with that (although this was a recorded not a live simulcast):

http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/bbctwo/england/1974-05-27

As you can see on the above link specific reference is made to the stereo sound as it was a big deal in those days but there is no such reference on the Queen TV listing below:

http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/bbctwo/england/1975-12-24

Even a recorded Queen simulcast would have been great but I don't think that happened either, no mention was made of stereo sound when it was repeated the following Christmas and it is not on the radio listings for that day:

I was always wondering why all the recordings of radio broadcasts are always edited, if it was broadcast live on radio in 1975, at least one recording should appear during the last 40 years
