On the other hand, it is in a geographic place that puts it on the edge of a number of spheres of interest (Ottoman-Greek, Soviet-Western, Arabic/Turkic [not the same as Turkish], Europe-Africa-Asia, there are probably more). That could easily have resulted in a less stable democracy (like Cyprus).
