wow. what other famous people have you met? sorry if that's been covered in this thread - i didn't have time to go through all these pages.
i haven't read much into that - but there's a whole story + memoir written by her about all that... bipolar disorder i think was the culprit actually.

Jimmy Dean you should try and find time to go through all these pages. There's Thor gold on every page! :)
Thor, you didn't burst the Saint Mary bubble - as people have said, she did that herself, turning on everyone before Freddie had gone cold. She even objected to the band receiving his quarter of the royalties (for the last 4 Queen albums) in his will, and according to Freddie's mother she stopped speaking to the Bulsaras too...whilst simultaneously claiming everyone abandoned HER because she wasn't generous like Freddie (!). It seems they tried to make an effort with her only to have the doors repeatedly slammed in their faces, with people like ex manager John Reid claiming she said "yes but I won in the end, didn't I!" when he tried to console her.
It's thanks to her that many fans have a certain hostility towards his gay friends, (her comments have resulted in some fans' latent homophobia rearing its ugly head). She said in an interview most of them were there for the 'free gifts, concert tickets and the booze' and people believe her. Phoebe's made it clear though that you New York friends were not using him, but because Mary was his trusted friend, people tend to believe her words over Peter Freestone's and now have the impression he was sucked dry by a bunch of gay layabouts! I think it's a bit rich coming from a woman who was on his payroll since 1977, just for being his friend.

Also can I just say, I dread the Barbara thing coming up in the film. She has no relevance to his life and career whatsoever and made some crazy and implausible claims about him. Now I do believe she WAS leeching off his fame, which contributed to their [temporary] falling out and lack of closeness in his final year. Some people are desperate for her to have a role though, because they want Freddie to be bisexual to fuel their own fantasies. Some people can't seem to grasp that gay men can have close friendships with women.
I also find it hilarious that people believe the Barbara crap (not just because her stories never added up and there's tons of proof to shut her down) but they believe her when she claimed Freddie tried to murder her in her sleep.
Yes, thats right- Barbara claimed that she was sleeping next to Freddie (where was his boyfriend Winnie?) and Freddie got up and strangled her. According to Barbara, Freddie was an attempted murderer and didnt stop trying to cut off her air flow until her personal assistant (that nobody ever saw even once) came in the room and pulled him off her. She also claimed he slammed her head into a sink because he was jealous that he had to share her with other men. Funny, as nobody ever saw any of this and Peter says it plain never happened.
Oh, and let's not forget the trance she claimed Freddie got into. According to Barbara, she and she alone was the one who saved him during a mental episode he had (again, that nobody ever saw or heard about) when he fell into a trance and started slamming his head against a metal heater in his bedroom until his head was pouring blood. Peter saw him daily (even in Munich) and never saw any trace of that being true. No scars on his head, no mention of any episode. No attempted murder and no assault on her.
Barbara also claimed that Freddie knew he had AIDS well before he got tested in 87 and so he willingly gave it to Jim Hutton. That brings her claims against Freddie to be: 1 count of attempted murder by strangulation, 1 count of physical assault, and multiple counts of manslaughter and fraud by intentional transmission of HIV. Freddie was no saint but come on.
Ridiculous, right? But fans buy it because she also claims to have been the only other woman he slept with after Mary and they would prefer to believe Freddie wasnt gay. Thats how far people will go to keep their fantasies about him intact. Peter has stated in his second book that he does not believe they ever had physical relations. Freddie told those around him (Jim Hutton and Crystal Taylor to name a few) that he never had sex with her but because Lesley Ann Jones put it in her book about him, its believed- or should I say... it gives people an excuse to claim he wasnt gay.
Barbara was a beard and friend. I use that word loosely... "friend", that is. People also seem to ignore the fact that Peter explained why Freddie "left" Barbara for a few years: she had been lying to the press about their relationship and Freddie found out. Freddie was also made aware of the reporters who happened to show up at all clubs and restaurants they visited together- they all just so happened to be friends of Barbara's. As his beard, she got plenty of photos taken of him holding her hand while his boyfriend Winnie had to walk behind them. That made for great tabloids, and Freddie felt used. Barbara "forgot" to mention that, and instead told Lesley Ann Jones that Freddie left her because he didnt want to infect her with HIV. In the same breath, she claimed he had no issues infecting Jim.
Now you understand why the Barbara topic gets so heated lol. Queen fans will believe he was a killer, if it means he wasnt gay.
Sorry for the rant, but I had to!

Not an expert (by any means) but seem to remember reading something to the effect that "vacant possession" had to be established prior to Mary's legally inheriting Garden Lodge. This was offered as the reason for requiring Peter, Joe and Jim to leave the house by February. Can't remember where I read it, not sure if it was valid.

I think that is correct and Jim and Joe were in the process of making new housing arrangements. However she had asked Peter to stay on and neglected to tell him until the last minute that he also had to leave. He had to scramble some accommodation at short notice and as a result, left some belongings there, which she illegally kept.
Also the three guys were made to live in the mews next door by December, and not allowed in the main house after 6pm, which was not part of the legal agreement. Mary hadn't even moved in yet and she got security to watch over them. It's not all her fault, because the house had to go through probate, but her actions were cold, calculated and selfish and she should have been more honest with Peter. And given his stuff back.

The Barbara stuff is insane and too many people are scared to raise the issue because a huge fight kicks off every time! None of her story can be corroborated with anyone else who knew Freddie well. But try telling them that and they will scream "gay conspiracy made up by his gay friends who wanted him to be the same as them!"
Freddie told his friends who he was in relationships with. Peter Freestone mentions them all in his books. He was there through all of them, so why would Freddie not tell him he was sleeping with Barbara? There is no motive for a cover-up operation.
Even though Phoebe has repeatedly said Freddie did not live with Barbara, (despite paying for half a property with her), people keep spreading this lie, making out they had this three year affair. Even though Freddie's solo album thanks his boyfriend Winnie for 'board and lodging'!
One of the worst things Barbara said has to be "[homosexuality] was a role he chose to play!" HA HA!
Rosemary Pearson wrote a book about how hard Freddie was struggling with his true sexuality from '68-'71, then obviously Mary also went through a difficult breakup with him in '76 in which she states he became "finally at one with himself" after two years of acting strange. It was a long, difficult journey, so the idea that Freddie - right in the middle of a period of homosexual promiscuity - should suddenly flip and go back to women is utterly implausible. And Barbara's claims he wanted to marry her are laughable at best. If he was going to marry a woman, it would have been Mary.
As to the security guards, I also remember reading that Joe left Garden Lodge early one morning to go and work out, locking the gate but not turning on alarm. Phoebe was expected to arrive within 30 minutes, no one thought leaving the alarm off for such a short period of time was such a a major concern.
Mary arrived in the interim to find the house "unalarmed" notified Jim Beach. The security guards were in place within a few hours.

I see a discussion about Mary and Barbara.
As a woman, I will tell you this: A woman who for years does what Mary did, is doing it for interests (whatever it is) or because of obsession. And the worst is the combination of the first and the second.
I don't see her as a "saint" but as a smart business woman. She herself agreed to appear with Freddie at public events where they would be photographed. It probably suited her.
Also, this story about her as his greatest love and the only friend is posted through the press and journalists.
Freddie gave her half of his wealth but doesn't mean that it was because she was "love of his life".
Maybe he had to do it because of some earlier promise, who knows.
He was a smart man and, of course, he had to know that she didn't like Jim.And he must have known that Jim wasn't with him for the money, Freddie knew that Jim loved him, that there is no money worthy of that love.
After all, he didn't return to London for her, he did it for Jim.
Maybe he thought he found the best solution for Jim,Joe and Peter to stay in the house, but I think he knew that she would find a way to get them out of the house ,he knew that Jim and Joe wouldn't stay in Garden Lodge for a long time, so he bought a house for Joe and paid for building a house for Jim.
I think it's not fair that in Freddie's biopic Mary is a central figure (if the movie really is done that way) and that Jim role will be minor or he isn't in the movie.
And Barbara,I think she just wanted to draw attention to herself.
Of course, I didn't know any of them, this is just my opinion and some of my conclusions.

@invisible woman, I agree entirely. Even Peter Freestone mentioned the creation of a Freddie myth in his second book and how the press and the Queen publicity machine kind of made their story more...how can I put this...more of a 'boy-meets-girl but oops he's secretly gay, but she still loved him anyway' story, because it makes Freddie somehow more palatable. It makes his complex relationships easier to understand and goes some way to explaining why she just sort of hung there with no real purpose.
I don't want the biopic to feature her as important as, while I acknowledge she was important to Freddie, she's very boring! Obviously I've never met her so probably shouldn't be judging but not a single one of Freddie's friends paints an interesting picture of her; she just seemed to exist and was nothing more than 'polite' and 'shy', then following his death, cold and grasping. Maybe she was dull and that nothingness was peaceful and grounding for Freddie?! That their relationship was more based on them serving a purpose for each other more than deep love, and that her inheritance was a massive reward for her undying loyalty? Plus according to her, he proposed to her and didn't go through with it, because he met David Minns a month later...he probably felt terribly guilty.
OK I will stop now, because I don't want to make Thor's thread about these women!

Fascinating discussion everyone,
You all have verified my reaction to Mary. Polite and shy
until the moment she got rich. 'Polite' perhaps because she
may have been worried about losing some favor with Freddie
if she wasn't....'Shy', because she had absolutely no interest in
what any of his gay friends had to say. I have the feeling now,
that she knew a fortune was coming her way even if Freddie
hadn't gotten sick.and was quite content in her role and would
wait until this happened. I have NO idea if she was cold and
calculating, but I have mentioned recently that others judge you
by the way you present yourself and what you do and what you
say, in this case what you didn't do or say.
One of my favorite quotes comes from an unlikely source but
has made an impression on my life. The Wizard of Oz tells the
Tin Man...."and remember my sentimental friend, a heart is not
judged by how much you love but by how much you are loved by
others." This fits Freddie well, but I am not sure if it fits Mary.

Hmmm....not sure where to begin, so I will just comment on some lines that "jump" out at me.

I guess it is possible that some people are hostile to Freddie's gay friends because of Mary's words. However, it seems beyond implausible that Freddie did not have some gold diggers in his life. There is certainly nothing wrong with enjoying the gifts of a generous person, but real relationships involve a degree of reciprocity. I don't mean repaying Freddie with gifts, but there can be a reciprocity of friendship, loyalty, caring like he received from his NYC friends. It is not the gay part that people object to, just the idea that his generosity might have been one-sided.
"Latent homophobia"...Call me naive, but I find it hard to believe that any true fan of Freddie's is deep down a homophobe.
Villiers...a while back you recommended a book, "This is the Real Life" by David Evans and David Minns. I ordered it online and am about half way through. I'm really enjoying the anecdotes. One observation from the book that really stuck with me was from David Minns, who if people recall, was Freddie's first boyfriend.
"This generosity of Freddie's has become legendary although the recipients of it were often perplexed exactly as to why they had been singled out. He didn't need an occasion to give someone a present; any excuse would do. To look back, it seems sad that in return he received so little from the many beneficiaries of his bounty"
My gut feeling is that David was not talking about reciprocity of gifts.
@ invisible woman, Villiers
Maybe your observations about Mary are correct, but we would need to believe that Freddie was so lacking in judgement that he couldn't see what a calculating person Mary was. A while back (July 11th) Thor had this to say about Mary:
"Freddie loved Mary above anyone else, man or woman. It was obvious every time I saw them together. Even if Freddie was upset about something and might vent about it among his male friends, when Mary was suddenly present, his whole demeanor would change. I think she represented the
calm in every storm of his life and he cherished her for that. I know he always thought that she sacrificed her own happiness for his. I believe that even with the love of a son and his father, she put off marriage out of respect for Freddie until after his passing."
I don't know Mary...I don't know people who know Mary, but Thor's words paint a picture of someone, who despite what others think about her now, was completely devoted and loved Freddie, and he loved her right back. An unconventional love, maybe, but that doesn't make it any less real. It is possible Thor was just being polite, but his observations do not describe a woman who was "obsessive" or "self-interested". Could she have been more graceful in the way things were handled after Freddie's death, probably. I always felt bad that Peter Freestone never had a chance to remove some of the things that represented cherished memories with Freddie. Should Mary be an important part in the Queen movie....most definitely!
Finally... Are there really that many people who want to imagine that Freddie was bisexual because it either makes him more palatable or fuels some kind of fantasy? Why let the imagination stop halfway? Why not imagine that deep down he was really heterosexual and that he just took a wrong turn down homosexual lane and never got back on the right track? Poor misguided Freddie!
Anyway, thanks to everyone for this discussion. It was interesting reading, even if I don't always share the same viewpoint.

@ Thor...I posted my last reply before reading your last post. Hmmmm........
Rainbow61, there is absolutely homophobia in the Queen and Freddie fandom. VERY much so. Ive seen people straight up say that Adam Lambert is disgusting because hes "too gay". Freddie fans call him a faggot all the time. They also say freddie was bisexual and not gay because he was "better than that". I see comments like that literally every single day on facebook and Instagram. All from Freddie fans. Its usually women. They gay erase Freddie daily because they want to believe he would be interested in them. And yes, its proven by the fact that these women are sexually attracted to him (they make that very clear) and they go to extreme lengths to trash talk his gay friends and even make up stories about freddie being with women after Mary (when it never happened). Ive had women tell me that Freddie HID being being bisexual and PRETENDED to be gay to "impress his gay friends because they all hated bisexuals. Freddie wasnt one of them. He was better than that."
I see at least 5 photos posted online a week of freddie standing near a female with women screaming in the comments "WHO IS SHE? AND THEY SAY HE DIDNT LIKE WOMEN! HE WAS BI ERASED BY HIS GAY FRIENDS!" The photos are always easily explained by peter or Jacky smith (freddie with fan or freddie with mack's wife) and they claim that peter and Jacky are bi erasing him.
" It is not the gay part that people object to, just the idea that his generosity might have been one-sided." No, my friend... Its definitely the gay part that they react to. Why? Because Barbara literally accused freddie of murder and attempted murder BUT SHES BELIEVED AND SUPPORTED bc she also claimed to have had sex with him and they WANT to believe he was bisexual. Meanwhile, Paul Printer sells his story and hes hated forever (rightfully so but why wasnt Barbara when she LIED and used Freddie's name for her own benefit AND accused him of assault and murder)
They've claimed that Freddie said gays are "beneath" him. Which wasnt true. Sorry, but homophobia and gay erasing happens WAY too often in his female fan group. As I mentioned 2 posts back, they're even willing to believe Barbara's claims that Freddie was an attempted murderer as long as he slept with her because it means he wasnt gay. Thats how far they're willing to go.
PS glad you like the book I suggested. You'll also notice David Minns said the same in the book. "It amazes me that Freddie would be around so many who didnt support gays when he himself was one. "

PS glad you like the book I suggested. You'll also notice David Minns said the same in the book. "It amazes me that Freddie would be around so many who didnt support gays when he himself was one. "
