Amusing FREDDIE nugget-
The time we flew to London in the Concorde, about 1986 or 87. Freddie was anxious
to meet Brandon, my boyfriend of 2 years at that time (later a total of 7 years). Brandon
was a little nervous about meeting him. Well, 30 minutes into the first meeting he
pulled Brandon off to the side and said, "I've never seen Thor like this before...come tell
Mother EVERYTHING!" He was won over with Freddie's warmth within 45 minutes of
meeting him and really enjoyed his private conversation with Freddie. Brandon later
said.."he was so nice to me and completely down to earth, not what I expected at all."

I love hearing that he could be down to earth!
That he referred to himself as mother really makes me laugh; it's so camp and kind of cute.

Further to what we were talking about Re: gay men, most gay men I know have attempted relationships with a female at some point. Obviously we know Freddie did this, twice. Has that been your general experience with the gay men you know/knew? Have you?

Also another random and slightly pointless question: what did you think when Freddie shaved his moustache off? Did you like the new look? lol

I agree that the "Mother" Freddie story is very cute.

In contrast to the NY Duaghters close-knit family, do you think that Freddie had similar "family" of friends in Munich?

Freddie seems to have been lonely in the 1982-1984 time period, and it appears that Queen was undergoing some tumultuous times as well. Barbara might have been a platonic soulmate for a while, but ultimately suddenly Freddie abandoned Munich for the Garden lodge.

I am not sure what my question is, but I was wondering if you could comment on the 1982-1984 time period as it relates to the band and Freddie's general state of mind.

Who was the 2nd attempted female relationship?

Hey Panchgani,
Freddie was still in New York in 1982 and we saw each other
a lot. He left in 1983 and the Munich period comes up as a big
blank to me. To emphasize this blank period, I did not even
know there was a Barbara Valentin at all. We reunited during
the Garden Lodge era.

Rainbow61, not sure how you got "clinical" from Freddie saying he found the relationship in Jim that hes always wanted lol, but heres something that should make Freddies feelings for Jim clear. A little note Freddie left for him which states plainly "you make me a very happy man. Yes, happy as I have never been in my life". Id say thats love, wouldn't you? This item was sold by Huttons estate after Jim died by the same auction house that sold Michael Jackson's estate. Its really from freddie (yes, even despite the grammar mistake). Just thought I'd share.

T
Villiers,
What a gem. Thanks for sharing this.

My pleasure, Thor

LOL Thor!

Love that golden nugget! Thank you for sharing it!

In that interview, he clearly said: "I'm very happy with my relationship" and later he mentioned "I've got a very understanding relationship" and "very good relationship".
Of course, no one knows what is in the head of another person and what this person thinks.

This is not fair to me: some can tell about Jim the worst words but always justifying Mary and give her the best compliments.
The idea that Freddie was with Jim only for sex, without love, and that love was for Mary is also not fair to me.

Many relationships break up when one of the partners gets ill, but Jim stayed with Freddie all the time and for me it's proof that he was a great and wonderful man.

There are also opinions that Freddie was with Jim because of illness. Why would it be so? If he didn't love Jim, he could have pushed him, break up, even don't tell him about disease? Why would AIDS be the reason for the relationship?

Of course,Mary and Jim had different roles in his life, but one is friendly and another love relationship.

But ok.,everyone has their own opinion and mine is this.
I will not bother on this topic anymore.
S
Villiers, I just saw your link to the note. I didn't look at first as I thought it was a link back to the interview that was being discussed. That is lovely to see, thanks for sharing it.

@Villiers

Sorry "clinical" was not the right word. I guess that made it sound cold, and Freddie never seemed cold. I just meant that referring to a relationship as a niche lacked the exuberance I would have expected from someone who was referring to a new, true love. Freddie also mentioned finding solace and not having to try so hard anymore...wanting a genuine tranquil after the storm. I got the impression he was happy with Jim because Jim was a refuge from the craziness in his life. I'm not sure that is love, but it does sound warm and comfortable and exactly what he needed at the time. This was all from a taped interview with David Wigg in Ibiza on his birthday in 1987. It was a fascinating interview. Freddie was so honest, reflective, and funny at times. It's the same interview where he mentioned he'll be long gone before 70. The overall tone was one in which Freddie seemed a bit somber and weary from life. But this would have been after the AIDS diagnosis, so that would be understandable.

By the way, thanks for sharing that note he gave to Jim. That was precious.
Y
Well, yeah I think that does mean love. Considering Freddie said he loved Jim, maybe we should take it to mean...he loved Jim? But on to other topics now- I'm sure Thor didnt mean for this thread to turn into a Jim Hutton or Mary Austin festival lol.

And you're welcome. I dont own the note myself but I would have loved to have. Its a great item.
T
Villiers,
I just said I love all the thoughts and theories. I DO mean this thread for
anything by anyone that stays non-offensive and out of the gutter. This
is not just MY thread, it belongs to fans, which happens to include me.
PLEASE talk about whatever you want related to the entire group,
the history and the band members surrounding Freddie.

Thanks, Thor. I was afraid we were taking the focus too far off you. Is Lee still in contact with Peter? Or with anyone you guys met through Freddie? I'm sure you guys are something that brings a smile to Peters face. All those fun times must be a warm memory for him now

Also wondering if you have anything freddie signed? Any Christmas or birthday cards?
