Rainbow—That is cool that your grandparents were French Canadian. I grew up in English Canada and did 7 years of school French. Most of that was compulsory. After that I could conjugate lots of verbs but couldn’t comfortably order a coffee in Montreal. I learned to speak French at the Alliance Francaise in NYC! I’ve spoken French in Paris, Brussels, and many places in French-speaking parts of Canada. There are differences but they are the same language on both sides of the pond. Anyone from Quebec who has some school French can make themselves understood. But mix a language snob from Paris and a speaker of more rustic or street French from Quebec, and you may hear “I spoke to a guy from Quebec and I couldn’t understand a word he said!” That’s more accent than anything else.
The differences are more than those between American and BBC English. I’m not sure they’re greater than between say Appalachian English and Newcastle. I say that because I sent a video made by a guy with a Geordie accent to my friend in Appalachia and he couldn’t understand a word! Yet can understand the BBC.
I highly recommend places like the AF for learning to speak a language. So much better than the way languages are taught in schools. I have good reason to believe most of my French teachers could barely speak the language.
And I’m checking out those bands. De Temps Antan use a more neutral accent in some of their songs, while others are stronger Quebecois. But a great way to get some of the rust off my French.

Hey Galileo, on a purely technical level, how did you make that link to Brian's Instagram page clickable? I've tried to do that with links, but never been successful.
Saint juib, I'm not good at downloading links but I think someone did it for me.To me it just says it doesnt matter if things are correct and completely accurate about his bandmates life and story just as long as it's made alot of money and it was the best movie ever.Complete bullshit to me.Is that any better than the press that are writing these false articles and stories as long as they are making money?

To make links clickable on QZ, just remove the “s” in “https”. This works most of the time. No one seems to know why it doesn’t always work. I’ve seen two different people post the identical link, one with the “s” and one without, and still only one works.

My grandparents (mother’s side) were born and raised in the US, but they attended a French school, went to mass at a French church, and lived in a largely French-Canadian neighborhood. You mentioned Montreal...thankfully most people seem to be bilingual there...so no problems ordering anything. Poutine, my favorite artery-clogging food, is a must every time I visit. Thanks for the tip about the Alliance Francaise. I had never heard of that organization before.
You are right about accents. Some British accents are extremely difficult for me to understand. A Scottish accent is particularly challenging, although I think the sound is absolutely lovely.
On a related note…I love the short YouTube clip of Freddie speaking a few words in Japanese. He looks so proud of himself! (Thanks for the technical advice on how to post links…I hope this works...I removed the "s")

It seems there are many of us who studied a second language in school, but never had the opportunity to use it much and eventually forgot what we learned. Except we all probably remember Lesson #1 found in most foreign language books: "Hello, my name is ________. What is your name? How are you today? I am fine." One of the things I was most excited about in 7th grade French class was being able to select a French name that I could use throughout the year. I selected Gabrielle, and to this day I am particularly fond of that name!

Freddie could be singing in any language and I would enjoy hearing his magnificent voice and watching him perform! Actually, listening to foreign language songs can be a fun way to learn the words of another language...that's probably why I remember "Frère Jacques" after all these years.
